Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Motivation of the Study
With the social and economic growth, people’s living standard are increasingday by day. And more and more people pay their attention to the pursuit of happiness.And as an indispensable spice of life, humor plays an essential part in chasinghappiness. And comedy skit, as an important representative of the forms of humor,bears the expectation of millions of Chinese television audience ever since its firstappearance on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in the 1980s. And as a result of thecontinuous concern people have shown towards comedy skits, more and moreattention is paid to the study of humor in them. Moreover, from the ways the comedyskit players use to produce humor, people can get some skills to communicatehappily with others, especially the skills to eliminate the awkwardness when facingsome embarrassing situations and know more about the charm of language indifferent circumstances. Therefore, humor in comedy skits is a field worth attentionboth from the theoretical and practical aspects.Humor has been a hot topic for scholars both at home and abroad ever since theancient time. A lot of researchers have conducted studies about it in different waysand from different fields. Some scholars have studied humor in the traditional waywhich contains three theories: the Congruity Theory, the Superiority Theory and the Relief Theory (Martin 1998; Raskin 1985; Marreall 1983). A lot of studies abouthumor are conducted using the theories of pragmatics such as the Relevance Theory,the Cooperative Principle, the Politeness Principle (Cen Qunxia, 2004; ChenChunhua, 1999; Jiang Yong & Liu Guohui, 2004; Tu 2003; Wang Yong 2001). Andstudies from the cognitive perspective are of a big amount but they are mainly basedon the frame-shafting theory and the conceptual blend theory (Liu Guohui 2006;Wang Wenbin 2004). All the studies have obtained some achievements, but they alltake dialogues between the comedy skit players as a static text under the traditionallinear syntax rather than a dynamic real-time development of the dialogues. Andhumor in comedy skits is generated as a consequence of the interactional dialoguesbetween the players which makes a requirement for the scholars to treat the linecontent as a dynamic development result. And “dialogic syntax explores thedynamics of structural coupling” (De Jaegher et al. 2010; Fuchs and De Jaegher 2009;Stephens et al. 2010; Varela et al. 1991), which meets the above requirement. Andresonance, as the core concept of dialogic syntax, represents a developing process ofactivation and elaboration of certain aspects of the perceived relationship betweencomparable linguistic elements. In comedy skits, how do the players set out thepunch line step by step and produce the humorous effect and how is it reflected at thelevel of language and cognition? This
thesis attempts to take Cognitive Linguistics asthe theoretical background, with ECM as the basic framework and resonance actingas the supportive role to construct a new model of ECM+for an analysis of theproduction of humor in Zhao Benshan’s comedy skits selected from the CCTVSpring Festival Gala with the purpose of offering a better way of explaining thecognitive mechanism of humor.
