Racism in Black Tipped Workers

Many findings indicate that consumers of both races discriminated against blackservice providers by tipping them less than white service providers. Furthermore, thisserver race effect on tipping was moderated by perceived service quality and diningparty size. The racist origins of tipping persist, meanwhile, in the take-home wages ofnonwhite restaurant workers, who earn 56 percent less than their white colleagues. Inone study, researchers at Cornell University and Mississippi College found thatcustomers at an unnamed national chain restaurant—even the blackcustomers—tipped white servers better than black servers. According to MichaelLynn’s research, consumers of both races discriminate against black service providersby tipping them less than white service providers. Furthermore, this server race effecton tipping is moderated by perceived service quality and dining party size. Thetheoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed. Particularlynoteworthy is the possibility that the server race effect on tipping represents anadverse impact against black servers that makes the use of tipping to compensateemployees a violation of employment discrimination law in the United States.

Becauseof sever discrimination directing at black people, black tipped workers cannot receivelegal wages belonging to them. Tipping trust and tip credit expropriate money earnedby black tipped workers, which makes these workers into poverty. Fortunately, tippingcan resist poverty they face. These tipped workers use tips to control their own labor.Black tipped workers often play with tips which help workers pass the time, reducefatigue, and establish skills with the ultimate benefit of giving workers some feelingof control over their labor and decreasing their feeling of subordination. Workersgamble on the generosity of customers as they walk in the door. And tipping alsomakes great contribution to establish black middle class. It is well know that Pullmanporters, the important part of black tipped workers, have great influence on blackmiddle class. They build schools, by using tips they earn, to ensure that all of theirchildren can obtain education and better employment, which changes poverty in blackmiddle class. The tipped workers also try their best to persuade policy-makers tochange wage laws to improve their minimum wage and keep tips, which decreases thepoverty rates of black tipped workers.
