Many findings indicate that consumers of both races discriminated against blackservice providers by tipping them less than white service providers. Furthermore, thisserver race effect on tipping was moderated by perceived service quality and diningparty size. The racist origins of tipping persist, meanwhile, in the take-home wages ofnonwhite restaurant workers, who earn 56 percent less than their white colleagues. Inone study, researchers at Cornell University and Mississippi College found thatcustomers at an unnamed national chain restaurant—even the blackcustomers—tipped white servers better than black servers. According to MichaelLynn’s research, consumers of both races discriminate against black service providersby tipping them less than white service providers. Furthermore, this server race effecton tipping is moderated by perceived service quality and dining party size. Thetheoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed. Particularlynoteworthy is the possibility that the server race effect on tipping represents anadverse impact against black servers that makes the use of tipping to compensateemployees a violation of employment discrimination law in the United States.
