CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
1.1 William Golding and Rites of Passage as a Bildungsroman
Amongthe contemporary writers such as Doris Lessing, Angus Wilson and Philip Larkin,Golding was “seen as a visionary dealing with universal and essential human issues”(Gindin 1). In 1983, Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for hisliterary achievements, according to the Nobel committee, “[w]ith the perspicuity ofrealistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the humancondition in the world of today” (“William Golding”).In 1940, Golding was enlisted in the Royal Navy, serving throughout the war,and was involved in various missions including several memorial battles such asGerman battleship Bismarck and Normandy Invasion. Buckley mentions that“[e]xperience as a naval officer in a brutal war, however, convinced Golding of thereality of illogic, unreason, and evil and utterly destroyed any lingering complacencyabout the human condition” (Buckley 273). The wartime experiences have becomethe source of Golding’s literary works. When the war was over, Golding recognizedthat “in the past he had been na ve and adolescent, that the war had demonstrated allthe horrendous cruelties of which man was capable” (Gindin 4). Those years’ life atsea and war rendered Golding a chance to recognize humanity in an enclosedenvironment—warship. Golding’s familiarization of the sailors and Royal Navy aswell as the recognition of the darkness of human nature according to his experiencesin World War II provided him various materials for his novels especially representedin his sea trilogy To the Ends of the Earth. Golding returned home in 1945 andrestarted his teaching career at Bishop Wordsworth’s School as before. Apart fromteaching, he began to write novels in his spare time and became a great successfulwriter.

literature review
Rites of Passage was published in 1980, and it won the top award of BritishLiterature—The Man Booker Prize for Golding in the same year. Among readers andcritics, Rites of Passage gains various positive comments. The notable phrases arequoted from Ronald Gray’s critical
essay: “an original and beautiful intelligent novel”,“little classic”, “a profound and subtle comedy of the darker kind about class andpower…a rather terrifying delight to read”, an artistic triumph…deftness oftouch…verve and buoyancy” (Gray 242).This celebrated work is highly praised all over the world and the studies on it areabundant. Critics’ research scope involves diversified fields, including the explorationof the theme of human nature, the studies on narrative arts, as well as the studies byapplying postmodernism approach.John Haffenden’s interview with Golding in his Novelists in Interview first cameout in 1985. However, the interview in effect was conducted in autumn in 1980 which two weeks before Rites of Passage won Booker Prize of that year. John Haffendenanalyzes the background, stylistic features, and the themes of Golding’s novels. The motif of Rites of Passage gains extensive attention from the critics. The earlyresearch mainly exposes the internal theme emerged in Golding’s works—thedarkness human nature. Baker interviewed Golding in 1981. During the interview,Golding interprets the meaning of “passage” in the novel. He believes that “passage inthe wider sense is simply rites de passage, it’s growing up and growing old” and“initiation rites are part of the rite of passage”
