B. Disease and the Islamic Threat
The Catholic figures’ attack on holy knights is analogy to dreadful diseasedevouring people’s life. Consequently the anxiety about the safety of Protestant Englandis inspired. However, this fear and anxiety originate not only from the Catholic group, but also from Islamic figures who is also severely diseased. In the Spenserianresearching field, The Islamic group is relatively paid little attention. As a matter of fact, the diseased Islamic figures can be traced in both book 1 and book 2.In book 1, after deceived by Archimago, Redcrosse abandoned Una, the real truth, and rides aimlessly on the plain where Duessa and Sanfoy appears in front of him.At last him chaunst to meete upon the wayAfaithlesse Sarazin all arme to point,In whose great shield was writ with letters gaySans foy: full large of limbe and every jointHe was, and cared not for God or man a point. (Ⅰ.ⅱ.12)Here, the word “Sarazin4” reveals the Islamic identity of Sans foy. According toProfessor John V. Tolan, “medieval Christian writers did not speak of “Islam” or“Muslims”, words unknown (with very few exceptions) in Western languages before thesixteenth century, Instead, Christian writers referred to Muslims by using ethnic terms:Arbs, Turks, Moors, Saracens” (14). Therefore, Sansfoy, along with his two brothers,Sansjoy and Sanslay, represents the Islamic force. Meanwhile, Sansfoy is “faithlesse”and “cared not for God or man a point”, unveiling their pagan identity. They are anothersetback for the Protestant knights.Islamic figures can also be found in book 2. After the journey in the house ofMammon, the holy knight Guyon is both physically and spiritually weak, and is in acoma. His life is at stake after his enemy, Cymochles and Pyrhochles, find him. Butluckly, Arthur appears timely to rescue Guyon. Arthur has a terrible battle with the two“paynim” (pagans).

Chapter ThreeDisease and Medicine: the Remission ofAnxiety

By the metaphorical treatment of disease, Spenser vividly reveals the religiousdilemma in his century. The threat and invasion of the Catholic and Islamic powers arejust like disastrous disease which greatly impairs the health of Protestant England. Therefore, similar to the knights, the nation is infected with “disease”. In addition, inthe early modern England the nation was usually considered as human body. Andsubsequently many people tried to recover the health of England from the perspective ofmedical treatment. Therefore, it can be noticed that along with the anxiety of religiousidentity, Elizabethan people had attempted to explore the positive methods to reducethis kind of anxiety through medical methods. Harris points out Elizabethan people’sendeavor to cure the diseased nation.Political writers, playwrights, and pamphletters attempt to explain not only thenature if the corpus politicum’s ills; styling themselves (or the judiciary, or the monarch)as the nation’s “physicians,” the c论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
