of fertility.2In the pastoral poem, the Romanpoet places the garden of love at the top of mountain surrounded by open field, wherethere were no white frosts, rough winds or dark clouds. In this garden, all leaves livedfor love, and in the season of love each happy tree was under the power of love: palmsstooped towards palms, poplars admired for poplars, sycamore whispered to sycamoreand alders muttered to alders. There were two springs, from which gushed sweet waterwith honey and bittered water with poison. Cupid, the god of love, was said to dip hisarrows in these springs.4It is enough to note that the garden of Venus written byClaudian shares similar characteristics with other classic paradise like the Golden Age,however, it distinguishes itself from others in that its association with love, whichprovides new background and orientation. It has been a tradition ever since that gardenserves as the embodiment of love. It is noted that the garden of love in classic worksgives a hint of the presence of the love of god in the garden. In most cases, the classicgarden of love is a place of sensual pleasure, exerting huge impact on poetry of secularlove.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that William Shakespeare is one of the most prestigious andoutstanding dramatists and poets in the history of world literature. During Shakespeare’slifetime, he wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets and 2 long poems. He is surpassingly greatbecause his works never fail to bear a kind of closeness to human life and never fail tobe the mirror reflecting human nature. As Shakespeare’s only sequence of sonnets,Shakespeare’s Sonnets have immortal artistic values for amusement and appreciation. Itboasts the nature of clemency, the sensitivity of beauty, the discernment of moral andthe enthusiasm of innocence. And the rich meanings and profound thoughts in theSonnets are the reflections of the poet’s zigzag but colorful experiences. Therefore theSonnets as a whole sequence serves as a golden key to open the poet’s emotional life aswell as the characters of his time.Shakespeare’s Sonnets have attracted a large number of critical attention since itwas published, most of which concentrated on biographical readings and thematicinterpretations. Nevertheless, the language itself is a great charm in the Sonnets and, imagery is an important part in poetic language. Imagery seems significant not onlybecause it is “a picture made out of words”, but because a poem may itself be animagery composed from a multiplicity of images. (Abrams and Harpham 152) There isno doubt that the interpretation of imagery is central to the appreciation andunderstandings of Shakespeare’s “sugared sonnets”. In Shakespeare’s Sonnets, there area great variety of clusters of images, among which the garden imagery predominates.Garden, a recurring and prevailing imagery in the western literature, appears frequentlyin Shakespeare’s Sonnets. As a vital construction of poetry, garden imagery not onlymakes language figurative and refined, but also has intricate associations with suchdominant themes as beauty, time and love.
