The thesis is aimed at making a contrastiveanalysis of features of evidentiality in Chinese and American college students’ English speeches, revealing the discourse features and providing implications for Englishteachers and English speakers in China. Therefore, the thesis needs to address thefollowing research questions:1) What are the characteristics of the overall frequency and distribution patterns ofevidentials in Chinese andAmerican college students’English speeches?2) What are the similarities and differences of evidential use in the two corpora?3) What factors result in the differences of evidential use between the twocorpora?4) What are the discourse features of English speech embodied by evidentiality? And how are they embodied by the use of evidentials?

2.1An Overview of Evidentiality
Since Jakobson (1957) put forward the terminology “evidentiality”, manyresearchers have probed into the language phenomenon. From the 1980s, there hasbeen an upsurge in the study of evidentiality. Scholars and linguists at home andabroad devote themselves to evidential studies. They have figured out multipleperspectives to examine the linguistic category of evidentiality. This part will introduceevidential studies at home and abroad as well as different approaches to evidentiality. In the last few decades, the study of evidentiality has been developing fast, especially abroad. In 1981, the first worldwide conference on the study of evidentialitywas held in Berkeley, the United States. Then, in 1986, a collection of papers based onthe 1981 conference was published, which was titled as Evidentiality: The linguisticcoding of epistemology (Chafe & Nichols, 1986). It is this collection of works that hasestablished evidentialtity as an independent research topic, thereby consolidating itsstatus in the field of linguistics. Thus, the monograph serves as a milestone in the
history of evidential studies. In the 1990s, “evidentiality” stands alone as a subtitle inthe book Semantics (Saeed, 1997) and is followed by adequate interpretation. In 1998,the 6th International Pragmatics Conference was held in Reims, and two panels weregiven to discuss the issue of evidentiality. In the year of 2001, Journal of Pragmatics, aworldwide famed linguistic journal, published a special issue consisting of sevenselected papers on evidentiality presented at the 6th International PragmaticsConference, which amply indicates that the study of evidentiality has reached a certainscale in the international linguistic academia. In the same year, Mushin publishedEvidentiality and Epistemological Stance: Narrative Retelling. The monograph is ofhigh value to the study of evidentiality, through which Mushin explores how to studyevidentiality in a certain type of discourse and emphasizes the significance ofevidentiality in discourse study. In 2004, Aikhenvald pu
