evidential usage. Finally, this section will revealdiscourse features of English speech reflected by evidentiality, which is based onqualitative analysis.

4.1 General Features

In this part, quantitative study will be adopted to analyze general features ofevidentiality in Chinese and American college students’ English speeches. Generalfeatures of evidentiality include frequency of evidentials and distribution of evidentialtypes.Frequency of evidentials refers to the total number of evidentials in each Englishspeech. In this study, the corpus software BFSU Qualitative Coder 1.2 is used for dataanalysis. All types of evidentials are marked by highlighted colors in the text of eachEnglish speech. Then, the function of Statistics works out the count of each type ofevidentials. Thus, the total number of evidentials in the corresponding English speechcan be counted. The number of sentences in each text of English speech is also countedfor the analysis of occurrence of evidential per sentence. The frequency of evidentialsin 20 English speeches of Chinese college students is calculated as follows.

Conclusion

This chapter is a conclusion of the whole thesis. The final chapter has three parts.The first part will summarize the major findings of the current study. The second partwill discuss the implications of the study. The last part will point out the limitationsexisting in the study and offer some suggestions for further studies.The linguistic category of evidentiality can be interpreted from narrow sense orbroad sense. Within the theoretical framework of broad definition and classification,this thesis makes a comparative study of evidentiality in Chinese and American collegestudents’ English speeches. The overall frequency and distribution patterns ofevidentials in the two corpora are worked out by the corpus software BFSU QualitativeCoder 1.2 with an aim to describe the general features of evidentiality. The contrastiveanalysis of similarities and differences in evidential use is then conducted, which isfollowed by the explanation of the factors leading to the differences. The discoursefeatures of English speech manifested by evidentiality are discussed as well. On thebasis of quantitative and qualitative analysis, the thesis yields some findings asfollows:
1) All types of evidentials are used more or less in English speeches delivered byChinese and American college students’ English speeches. Therefore, evidentiality isan indispensable part of English public speaking, indicating source of information andthe speaker’s certainty of the information.
2) Zero-marked evidentials are frequently used in Englsih public speaking. Cast ina factual proposition, zero-marked evidentials express to the audience a sense ofdefiniteness and thereby raising the reliability of the information.
