Chapter Two Literature Review
There are five parts in this chapter. The author will introduce the previous studiesof English words and Chinese Characters on the basis of origin, development andformations. In addition, the author will focus on the introduction about spatial wordsand characters because these characters and words not only have original meaningsbut also have extended meanings. And due to the lack of studies on Chinese 'Zuo'and 'You', the author will further state the reasons for studying these two characters.
2.1 Previous Study on Words
In this part, there are two aspects about the study of words. The first one is thedevelopment and origin of words. The second one is mainly concerned with theformation of words.Words are elements of one language and give people a favor to makecommunications and interchange their ideas. “Typically, human beings use words fortheir meaning, in context, as part of communicative discourse”(M.A.K Halliday &Colin Yallop, 2007) They are considered as an essential part of linguistic knowledge.Victoria Fromkin & Robert Rodman & Nina Hyams (2007) clearly clarify that theformal representation of words is orthography in writing. A word is an orderlyundivided group of letters preceding and following blank space or punctuation marks.Leonard Bloomfield (1933) defines a word as “a minimum free form is a word”,which means that the word is the smallest meaningful linguistic unit that can be usedon its own. In other words, a real word cannot be divided into several parts that arenot able to convey specific meanings. For example, “interest” is a word but when it isanalyzed into three parts, in, ter, est, each of these parts independently does notrepresent anything. In addition, reasonable collocations or fixed phrases of a wordgains much importance to make this word used correctly. When it comes to “interest
