ng, Xia, Qianand Hou without enough further discussion about meaning extensions of thesecharacters, they have done few studies on Chinese spatial characters Zuo and Youfrom the perspective of cognitive semantics. So, exploring the meaning extensions ofChinese Zuo and You with cognitive theories can not only indicate a different point ofview to understand how the extension meanings of these two characters are formed but also enrich the studies of Chinese Zuo and You.Practically, according to what Lakoff & Johnson elaborate in the book MetaphorWe Live By about spatial concept, there is little doubt that Chinese spatial charactersare also made up of several-layered meanings. Absolutely, Chinese Zuo and You couldbe applied into extending deeper and more abstract meanings in a certain context. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study on these two characters. First andforemost, analyzing Chinese Zuo and You from old times to modern times candiscover what new meanings these two characters have, how these two charactersgenerate new meanings and whether new meanings are concerned with politics, economy, cultures, religions, etc. In addition, studying Chinese Zuo and You can sheda little light on Chinese characters, even spatial characters studies with cognitivesemantics theories and draw some people's attention from home and abroad to studyChinese characters. Finally, studying Chinese Zuo and You to some extent can makecontributions to helping those Chinese learners have a slightly better understanding ofChinese spatial characters.

Chapter Two Literature Review

There are five parts in this chapter. The author will introduce the previous studiesof English words and Chinese Characters on the basis of origin, development andformations. In addition, the author will focus on the introduction about spatial wordsand characters because these characters and words not only have original meaningsbut also have extended meanings. And due to the lack of studies on Chinese 'Zuo'and 'You', the author will further state the reasons for studying these two characters.

2.1 Previous Study on Words
In this part, there are two aspects about the study of words. The first one is thedevelopment and origin of words. The second one is mainly concerned with theformation of words.Words are elements of one language and give people a favor to makecommunications and interchange their ideas. “Typically, human beings use words fortheir meaning, in context, as part of communicative discourse”(M.A.K Halliday &Colin Yallop, 2007) They are considered as an essential part of linguistic knowledge.Victoria Fromkin & Robert Rodman & Nina Hyams (2007) clearly clarify that theformal representation of words is orthography in writing. A word is an orderlyundivided group of letters preceding and following blank space or punctuation marks.Leonard Bloomfield (1933) defines a word as “a minimum free form is a word”,which means that the word is the smallest meaningful linguistic unit that can be usedon its own. In other words, a real word cannot be divided into several parts that arenot able to convey specific meanings. For example, “interest” is a word but when it isanalyzed into three parts, in, ter, est, each of these parts independently does notrepresent anything. In addition, reasonable collocations or fixed phrases of a wordgains much importance to make this word used correctly.
