Abstract
As the first African American woman writer who wins the Nobel Literature Prize, Toni Morrison regards writing as “a way of thinking”, doing her utmost to preserve and promote black culture. Her works always contain a deep thought of African American’s current life and the loss of their origins. She especially cares about the group who are at the edge of society——black women, highlighting the characters of their gender, race and culture. Song of Solomon, considered as Toni Morrison’s representative work, is not an exception. In this book, although men take up the positions of leading characters, it is women who suffered the dual oppression by both whites and black men that is the object Morrison shows compassion and caring for. This article will start from the black feminism theory, including the origin, development and a brief introduction of it, then analyze the main female characters of Song of Solomon in details, and finally disclose the black feminism theme implied in this book.
In recent years, as the feminine movements gradually spread out, new arguments about universality and particularity have appeared. In 1983, the colored feminism theory was firstly put forward by Alice Walker, who dedicated on freeing people of all classes and races. After the mid-seventies, many important women writers in America attempted the tentative novel forms that construct and deconstruct the feminine self-consciousness. Toni Morrison was one of them. Such works' appearances indicate their precious reflection on and creation of traditional male-oriented narration and feminism novels. This genre of feminism focuses on the interlace of sex oppression and race oppression. Those representative women writers criticized severely on the common loss of all genres of feminism in the past: their main members were all middle-class white women from western world, so that only the problems of this limited group was what they actually paid attention to. The third-world, lower-class and colored women were largely neglected (Li 3-4).
