Abstract:
Charles Dickens is one of the greatest representatives of English critical realism in the 19th century .One of Dickens’s favorite novels, Oliver Twist, is known all over the world for the well-portrayed characters, its ruthless denouncement towards the dark social reality and its significance in critical realism.
1. Introduction
Charles Dickens, the greatest representative of English critical realism, was born in 1812.At that time, England was engaged in the turbulent events on the continent of Europe. As a result, a great many corrupt organizations and a lot of injustice appeared. Charles Dickens was not satisfied with the society and attacked the social reality with his pen. Oliver Twist is the second novel of Charles Dickens, and also his masterpiece, and Dickens himself loved it very much. This novel reveals a dark corrupt society which had the principle of making money illegally. In this thesis, I will focus on critical realism represented in this novel by analyzing some characters in this novel; one is Oliver Twist who is a naive, innocent, virtuous and brave orphan boy; another is Fagin who is a sly person and ruins the innocent by cheating; as well as its writing styles.
2. Social Background
2.1  The social reality in England in 19th century
Since the Industrial Revolution in the second half of the 18th century. The class structure in English society had undergone basic changes. The industrial capitalists began to play a more important role and vied for political power with the old nobility. Due to the support of the people, this struggle for power ended in the victory of the bourgeoisie over the aristocracy. With the development of capitalism, there arose a powerful working class. Though the conflict between labour and capital was for some time the background of the struggle between the feudal and the bourgeois classes, from the thirties of the 19th century, the struggle between the workers and capitalists became the basic contradiction in English social life.
Now England became a typical capitalist country. Having consolidated its positions at home, the British bourgeoisie strengthened its policy of colonial expansion in all parts of the world, successively competing for markets with other powerful countries of the world. So England was experiencing at the same time an aggravation of contradictions both at home and abroad. In spite of the parliamentary reform in 1832,the living conditions of the workers did not grow better but became steadily worse. In 1834 there was the passage of the Poor Law. According to it, the inhuman work-house were established, in which the poor people had to do heavy tasks and live no better than in jails.
