As we all know, there are lots of misers depicted in the literary world. Shylock and Grandet are typical representatives in this family. Shylock is a character of the Merchant of Venice which is one of William Shakespeare’s great comedies. Grandet is a character in one of the most famous works of Honore de Balzac. One is in England; the other lives in France. In the past years, a lot of people have studied Shylock and Grandet. As to Shylock, many scholars believe that he is a perfidious miser with bad faith; some scholars refute such an argument from ethnic, religious, human, national, legal and commercial aspects. He understands the value of money and knows how to cherish it. That he is stingy, greedy and pursues the gold is understandable. This thesis will use a new viewpoint, the psychology of narratology, to discuss these two characters. The previous studies are not comprehensive or not enough.
