A Study of the Theory of Evolution Shown in Hardy’s Novels

Ⅰ.Introduction
Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), novelist and poet, is one of the representatives of English critical realism at the turn of the 19th century. He was deeply influenced by Charles Darwin’s Theory of 代写英语论文Evolution, which may be seen from his view on religion as well as his writings. With the publishing of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, Hardy’s thoughts were shocked, and his religious belief changed. At the same time, he fully applied the principles of natural selection and struggle for existence to his novels, showing the fall of the primitive agricultural region. He introduces evolutionary theory into literature, which develops and surpasses the realism and enables him to become a precursor of modern literature. This paper is going to make a detailed survey of the evolutionary theory represented in his novels.

Ⅱ.Thomas Hardy and his main works
Thomas Hardy was born in Dorset, a southern country of England, which he called Wessex in his books. As a great novelist in the Victorian time and a poet in the modern period, he lived well into the 20th century but did his major works as a novelist in the 19th century. He is a traditional figure of the two great ages and an expression of the changing spirit and ideas.
Hardy divided his novels into three groups---novels of character and environment, novels of romance and fantasies and novels of ingenuity, of https://www.51lunwen.org/englishpaper.htmlwhich the first has been the most important and outstanding. Those novels are set in Wessex, a fictional primitive region. They are known for the vivid description of the vicissitudes of people who live in an agricultural setting threatened by the forces of invading capitalism. By common consent, these are the best six of this group: Under the Greenwood Tree (1872), Far From the Madding Crowd (1874), The Return of the Native (1878), The Major of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1896). “In those novels, Hardy truthfully depicts the impoverishment and decay of small farmers who became hired field hands and roamed the country in search of seasonal jobs. These laborers were mercilessly exploited by the rich landowners. He was pained to see the deterioration of the patriarchal mode of life in rural England.” (Liu Bingshan,1992:459) Hardy was apparently affected by these and the spirit of determinism, characteristic of the naturalistic works of the period, permeated his later novels as well. In this aspect and more, Hardy anticipated the coming of the modern novel in his century. The last two novels were so explosive for their destructive force against the established moral system and the industrialized value of the Victorian society that they are attacked violently by the critics. He ceased writing novels and at the end of the nineties, almost at the age of sixty, he turned entirely to poetry.
