  Jane Austen is one of the very few world famous women writers in the world, and she is the only one English writer who is mentioned in the same breath with William Shakespeare in their perpetual fame in literary critic's eyes. Her six novels are all translated into Chinese, and Pride and Prejudice is the one that is the most familiar to and adored by Chinese readers. Readers will be so delighted with it that they could hardly bear to put it down. Pride and Prejudice is also favored by our Chinese translators and there are more than ten who have translated this novel. The two most famous versions are translated by Wang Keyi and Sun Zhili. These two Chinese versions are greatly different from each other, but both of them have achieved great success and enjoy extraordinary popularity among Chinese readers. Sun Zhili once said that "as a literary lover, I like Pride and Prejudice best; as a translation enthusiast, I cherish my greatest wish which is to translate this masterpiece" (Sun Zhili, 2001:1)

　　　Sun Zhili speaks highly of Wang Keyi's translation of the novel. However, he also points out that there are still some misunderstandings in Mr. Wang's version of it. It is known to all, translation is never a work that is done once and for ever, thus Mr. Sun decides to retranslate his favorite novel. Because of the success of the former version translated by Wang Keyi, Sun Zhili is faced with more challenges and difficulties. He sticks to three principles during his translating process: first, faithfulness and accuracy are attached significant importance to; second, the translated text must be lively in terms of spirit and artistic value; last, the language of the translated text must be natural, fluent and coherent. Confronting such a difficult task, he strives to translate the novel for eleven months and his version also achieves great success.
　　　The two Chinese versions enjoy great popularity in China and attract countless fans. Some scholars as well as ordinary readers have tried to compare these two versions and they generally agree that Mr. Wang's version is fluent and natural and is focused on the beauty in form while Mr. Sun tries to achieve the harmony of form and spirit, namely the faithful beauty.
　　　In this thesis, the author attempts to make an analysis of Sun Zhili's Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice through analysis of context, language and style. The author studies how different effects are achieved by adopting different translating strategies in the version.
　　　Structurally, the thesis will be divided into six chapters. Chapter One introduces the topic. Chapter Two gives a general introduction to Pride and Prejudice; the theme and style of Pride and Prejudice as well as its author's creative intention are briefly studied. Only with deep understanding of the original work's theme, style and writer's intention, is it possible for a translator to have a truthful reproduction of it. Chapter Three introduces Sun Zhili, his dialectical translation and his version of Pride and Prejudice.
