 Introduction

Purpose and Significance of the Study

    In recent years, literary studies have begun to re-interpret literary works from a cognitive point of view. Cognitive stylistics focuses on the cognitive structure and cognitive process of language analysis and the option of language forms, which offers a more systematic and elaborate description of the relationship between context and its interpretation and opens up a new trail in comparison to former traditional analysis ignoring readers' cognition. Through selecting and analyzing the language structures which can express and deepen thematic meaning and aesthetic effect, we are able to reveal how https://www.51lunwen.org/euroliterature/ figure-background, cognitive metaphor and iconicity enrich the content of poems and help readers interpret poems thus to exemplify that cognitive linguistic theories are highly practical and operable and can yet be regarded as effective means in stylistic analysis(Burke 2005). Meanwhile, to help readers better understand and appreciate Emily Dickinson's poems is one of the main intents of this thesis.
    Cognitive stylistics regards poetry as a central form of human language behavior. This thesis attempts to show how the effect of the addition of a cognitive and stylistics dimension on the stylistic analysis. This thesis intends to prove that firstly, new insights can be acquired from the addition of a cognitive and stylistic dimension since the linguistic and cognitive approaches to stylistics are complementary. Cognitive stylistic theories can play an important role in interpretation and appreciation of poems like Emily Dickinson's; Secondly, cognitive tools are productive in offering analytic support to interpret more abstract and seemingly illogical texts. Thirdly, cognitive analysis can enhance the overall quality, depth and value of a traditional stylistic analysis.
