摘要:The idea of a woman fighting against the odds to become independent and successful on her own is not too far to achieve. She is not only successful in wealth and position, but also in family and love.
wife had died. Jane told Rochester she was an independent woman because her uncle left her five thousand Pounds. She was rich. It’s more important that she was her own mistress. So she married Rochester and lived a happy life.
In Jane Eyre, Jane struggles constantly to achieve equality and to overcome oppression. In addition to the class hierarchy, she has to fight against those who believe women are inferior to men and try to treat them as such. The conversation between Rochester and Jane can exemplifies it clearly. “Who in the world cares for you? Or who will be injured by what you do?” Rochester pleads. “I care for myself.” answered Jane, “The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself...” (Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre) The conversation takes place when Jane discovers Rochester has a mad wife. It is actually the second time in the novel that charlotte claimed equality for her heroine wit her hero. The first occasion was the time when Jane expected Rochester’s declaration of love by admitting her own feeling for him.
Later when Jane stayed with St. John and his sisters, her refusal to go with St. John as his wife was another example of desiring equality. St. John proposed a marriage to Jane in order to ask her to work with him in Africa. He wanted Jane to be his assistant, devoting her whole life to God. To St. John, Jane was not the one he loves; actually he didn't believe love and didn't need love. What he need was the helper. As he noticed that Jane was very calm and educated, which will be helpful in his work, he made this suggestion. In his opinion, Jane was only an accessory to him and he believed that she won't say no to him. But in fact, Jane refused him. Telling the truth, when Jane has the courage to refuse Rochester, her beloved man, I'm sure she definitely will refuse St. John, because Jane at this time was very independent in life as well as in thoughts. She can think for herself, and make a sensible decision. No one can control her as she can make a living by herself. She has changed from the oppressed one to the individual woman, with a well-paid job and a sum of money from one of the relatives. When she was independent in finance, she actually was equal to the man. She didn't need to depend on anyone. That was why Jane at last returns to Rochester so calmly. In her opinion, the reason why she leaves Rochester was that she was so inferior in status to Rochester and she didn't want to be the accessory to him. In order to keep her self-respect, she left the man. When she returned, she had got the money, a good job, it seemed that they are equal in status (actually it couldn't be really equal), which made Jane feel comfortable and could accept the tiny difference between them. She had no obvious inferior feelings. And at the same time, Rochester has lost one leg, which is another main reason to comfort Jane, as Jane is not so beautiful. Though at least she got what she is chasing for, and it is a happy ending, the hard experience and tortures she endures were so painful and miserable.
Margaret Fuller showed her opinions of liberty in Women in the Nineteenth Century, "It should be remarked that, as the principle of liberty is better understood, and more nobly interpreted, a broader protest is made in behalf of Woman. As men become aware that few men have had a fair chance, they are inclined to say that no women have had a fir chance..
