摘要:This paper gives some ideas to the study of Robinson Crusoe as well as to the study of modernity. The study reveals that the two aspects, the progressiveness and limitation of modernity, existed from its very beginning. However, the two aspects of modernity were covered by the remaining influence of God and traditional value in the 18th century. This influence makes Robinson’s optimism for modernity.

hich takes self-realization and freedom of will as their standard in measuring the value of life. But such life value system finally fails to direct men to seek their eternal fortune, for it neglects men’s spiritual fulfillment and attached too much emphasis to the material comfort. It ran to the end in the mid of the 20th century.
The core of Robinson’s value system is in the process of pursuit of wealth. Based on this concept, self becomes the center of the world; the fulfillment of men becomes the process of self expanding and conquering.
In the story, Robinson expressed from time to time his appreciation to the objects of the island, even when he was in very difficult situation. He did so because he thought he owned them. “I might find an opportunity to make my escape from this place and that this poor savage might be a means to help me to do it.” (Daniel Defoe, 2004: 247) This is the very way that Robinson thinks he customarily thinks other men and objects as “means”. Robinson lived in the world with himself as the center. (Wei Yingchao, 2003: 74)
Robinson’s life value considers fighting against strong opponents as a way to win the honor and dignity; it agrees that the fulfillment of will is the key to obtain the meaning of life. Robinson is fully aware of the physical limit of human beings and put stress on the spiritual strength, which he thought to be of great help to their will fulfillment. When Robinson thought he finished his task in training Friday into a Christian, he said with great satisfaction that it was his duty to do so. However, when to conquer and being conquered become general practice in the society, and the temporary satisfaction will be overwhelmed by constant tension and uneasiness. Robinson’s strong will in conquering and self-assertion had ever been regarded an important merit of the bourgeoisie, but later was recognized a seed of ill relationship between men and men as well as between men and nature in the later development of modern society. Robinson also conquered and enslaved men, and wouldn’t be merciful for anybody else. The value of modernity dominates his life. The concepts of individualism, colonialism, enterprising spirit and anthropocentrism ran smoothly and directed his activities effectively.
3.2.2 The Parochial Concept of Nature in Robinson Crusoe
Conducted by modernity, men began to regard nature as something measurable, calculable, tangible and profitable. The concept of nature with a fairy quality was abandoned. Nature is at first recognizable in man’s mind and then conquerable in man’s practice. The development of science and technology gradually takes off the mysterious garment of nature and convince people of a predicable, deductive and controllable mathematical nature. Though man’s recognition of nature in many fields is superficial and primitive, nature is viewed as something that may be ultimately perceived in the philosophic point of view. Nature is no longer mysterious and of fairy qualities as well as it is no longer a figure of omnipotent power; it is even not regarded as a place for man’s existence but the object of tools. In Robinson Crusoe people can see clearly that Robinson shows no respect to nature, instead, he regards nature as commodity and his personal property. His dream is to be the master and lord of the land. Being an object in his eyes, nature is lifeless and with no dignity which can be owned, exchanged论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
