关键词:the Feminist Consciousness爱玛女性意识英美文学Jane Austen

摘要:The novel by Jane Austen is characterized by the unique feminine and keen realistic insight. Different from the men realistic novelists, she writes from a keen feminine visual angle. Feminist consciousness focuses on the women characters' inner lives during their self- development written by women writers.

iousness of grasping her destine, for she is self—inferior in her mind.

3.2.2 Jane Fairfax’s Feminist Consciousness

In the eighteenth and even nineteenth century, for the majority of British society, and especially for the middle classes, the idea remained constant that while a man needed a career to justify his masculinity, being a woman was a "career" in itself. In an age of rowing emphasis on professionalism in careers, it became increasingly important for women to be professionals in this gender sense. Thus, the highest ambition for a good girl of any social class was to become a professional good wife and mother. Yet, even within this narrow domestic world women were expected to be subservient to their husbands. In Emma, Jane Fairfax is just “an angle in the house”.

In Frank’s eyes, however, Jane’s obedience makes her a good wife. Frank praises Jane highly, saying:

“…She is a complete angel. Look at her. Is not she an angel in every gesture? Observe the turn of her throat. Observe her as she is looking up at my father. ---You will be glad to hear (inclining his head and whispering seriously) that my uncle means to give her all my aunt's jewels. They are to be new set. I am resolved to some in an ornament for the head gill not it be beautiful in her dark hair?”

Frank Churchill regards Jane as “an angle in the house”. An ideal female image advocated by patriarchal society. And meanwhile he makes it clear that he values Jane only as a beautiful object. So there is something true in Mr. Knightley's response to the engagement of Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill----she (Jane) “will be a miserable creature” and “I am sorry for her. She deserves a better fate”.

Actually, compared with Emma, Jane is more perfect in many people’s mind, Emma has “no doubt” about regretting the inferiority of her talents in comparison with Jane’s. Jane is more sober than Emma, and more intelligent than Harriet. Intelligent and confident as Emma, also envy Jane in some aspects, in other words, Jane is nearly a perfect girl in people’s mind of the time.

Jane made great effort to change her fate, just the wild weeds, no matter how unfair the comments were, no matter how painful about Frank’s behaviors, she always persist in her consciousness of pursuiting her own love and happiness. From Jane’s behaviors, it can be concluded that she is not only an obedient girl, but also a faith pursuer. Sometimes, she is obedient as Harriet, but she never give up her faith in deep mind. Therefore, Jane Fairfax could be classified the representative of early feminist of the time.

3.2.3 Mrs. Elton’s Feminist Consciousness

Mr. Elton should be mentioned before Mrs. Elton, Mr. Elton, the respectable handsome vicar of Highbury, is a typical hypocrite. He hopes to make his fortune a brilliant and thus enter the class above him, represented in Highbury by the Knightleys of Donwell Abbey and the Woodhouse family at Hartfield. Consequently, he chooses Emma as the target, the heiress of Hartfield with thirty thousand pounds. Emma knows clearly there has been no real affection in Mr. Elton's courtship. He only regards marriage as a short-cut leading to fortune and higher social status. Emma even concludes Mr. Elton will soon try for Miss Somebody else with twenty or ten thousand pounds.
