a complaint that Bellow's women are underdeveloped. An examination of mothers and of maternal figures in which mothers are recreated can help to clarify the ambiguity and can determine the value which derives from the family in Bellow's work.

The woman as mother takes on a variety of characteristics which many of Bellow's women exhibit. Basically, the mother is a giver, a nurturer, the original source of pure love. Occupying the center the child's world, the mother protects and nurtures the child both physically and psychologically. The thoroughness with which she performs these acts of love shape the child's perception of himself and greatly influence his expectations in all subsequent personal relationships.

This section will examine some of Saul Bellow's novels in order to determine the extent to which the protagonists are defined by maternal characters.

2.1.1 Sarah Herzog in Herzog

Among all his novels, in the Herzog, Sarah Herzog most takes on the ideal maternal attributes of 'nurturing domesticity, self-sacrificing love, and extensive protection'. She is considered as a touchstone among which other women images in Bellow's novels are viewed. She is the most fully drawn mother of this type in Bellow's novels. She makes a 'melancholy beauty' (Bellow, 1996:39) memory at the center of the golden age of his childhood in Mose Herzog's eyes.

The four children of the family enjoyed a warm, protective refuge from their father's dismal failures through the efforts of Sarah Herzog. Moses remembers her this way: 'Mother Herzog, large-eyed, sat with the children in the primitive kitchen which the sun never entered. It was like a cave' (Bellow, 1996:89). In reflections on his childhood, Moses repeatedly refers to the darkness of the room, comparing it to a 'cavern' and the children to 'cave dwellers' (ibid:89). The association of Sarah Herzog's dark, primitive kitchen with a womb is suggested by the affection and nostalgia which characterize Herzo}'s memories of the place.

But Herzog's memories of his mother, however loving, are always tinged with an element of sadness. Originally from a wealthyPetersburgfamily with servants attending her, Sarah Herzog was reduced to cook, washerwoman and seamstress onNapoleon Streetin the slum. Herzog remembers her reply when she was once reminded of her genteel Russian past: 'That seems like a thousand years ago'. Said Mama: 'I have forgotten all about servants. I am the servant.' Sarah's service to her family involved no small sacrifice of herself. Her hair turned gray, and she lost her teeth, her every fingernails wrinkled. Her hands smelled of the sink' (ibid:113). Her persistent and loving service is dramatized when Herzog recalls that, after weeping a full day when she received the news of her brother's death, by the following morning 'she cooked the oatmeal nevertheless' (ibid:115). But certainly the best example of Sarah's strength of love and willingness is Herzog's poignant memory of how she managed to spoil her children:

She certainly spoiled me. Once, at night fall, she was pulling me on the sled, over crusty ice, the tiny glitter of snow, perhaps four o'clock of a short day in January.
