Under the influence of consumerism culture, marriage, love and friendship are measured according to the principle of commodity; the need of infinite desire causes the indifference of spousal relations, the tension of inter-generational relations and the apathy of compatriot relationship.

Secondly, this thesis will also deepen the theme of Dreiser’s family ethical tragedy, and illustrated it as a kind of social tragedy in nature. This thesis takes The Bulwark by Dreiser as the research object, systemize and describe the collapse of three types of family ethical value specially manifested in Dreiser’s work, which includes the collapse of martial relations, the collapse of inter-generational relations as well as the collapse of compatriot relations. By analyzing the text, the thesis advances to the understanding of the alienation of family ethic in America society.

Thirdly, this thesis will also discuss Dreiser’s complicated attitude of consumerism culture to the family ethical relations. For one thing, he approved to the positive aspect that represented the new consumption ideology, and regarded it as a kind of power to liberate human nature. For another thing, he also realized that, under the manipulation of consumerism, the infinite pursuit of the desire can only make people fall into huge emptiness, and make the “bulwark” of the family ethical relations completely collapse. Theodore Dreiser once commented like this, “harmonious family environment is a kind of flower in the world, nothing is more fragile than it, and nothing is more delicate than it. It is the most possible thing that can grow up in the family and nourish human nature to make it strong and upright”. 

The research methods in this thesis mainly include social-historical research method and the method of intensive reading of the text. Combining with the historical background of America society as well as related cultural theory, the thesis analyzes the influence of consumerism to American family ethical orientation, and also explores the various causes for the collapse of family ethical value in Dreiser’s work.

As for the definition of “family ethics”, it is not a much certain concept, and the connotation is all-inclusive, which touches upon sociology, psychology, anthropology and economics etc. Family ethics is an ethical theory based on family roles. (Roger T. Ames, 2011) Different with virtue ethics, family ethics is not individualistic. Morality is derived from a person’s relationship with their family.
