benign family atmosphere play a vital part in the whole life of children. If there is no conjugal harmony and inter-generational harmony, the family will inevitably go to collapse. Only the appropriate combination of rational wills and free wills can the feelings get enhancement. If there is lack of consciousness of responsibility, and they cannot support each other, tolerate each other and understand each other, the feeling is hard to maintain. Love should be mutual. The thesis is on the basis of core value of the family ethical relationship, and divides the whole thesis into four parts. Firstly, the thesis introduces Dreiser’s times and events, summarizes the overseas and domestic research status of the book The Bulwark by Dreiser, and also points the research purposes and methods of the thesis. Secondly, by discussing the “husband and wife ethics”, “parents and children ethics” and “sisters and brothers’ ethics”, the thesis explains the family ethical conflicts under the influence of consumerism, and shows Dreiser’s deep concerns and reflections on American family relations as well as the status of American social-family relations.

The introduction part firstly analyzes and reorganizes the overseas and domestic research status of The Bulwark, then defines the “family ethical relationship”, “love”， “responsibility” and “friendship” in the thesis, and makes a general introduction of the ethical literary criticism, and points the feasibility and significance of interpretation of The Bulwark from the perspective of family ethical relationship.

The first chapter mainly analyzes the marital ethical relations. It is doubtless that consumption culture has effect on American society, and spreads to various ethical relationships including marital family life. Marital ethical relationship is the most preliminary ethical relationship in a family. The marital relationship between Solon and Benecia of traditional family was built on the basis of loving each other. They love each other and loyal to each other in the marriage, and support each other in spiritual and material aspects. Therefore, their marital relationship is very happy and solid. What the couples care more about each other’s exchange value, which causes the fragility of their marital relationship. Although Orville and Dorothea’s marriage met their material needs, they didn’t get money by their own efforts, therefore, they always worried that the “scandal” of the original family would influence their position in the family they have established. As a matter of fact, in contemporary America, most of successful marriage was that marriage that can make enough money. In the 20th century America, what makes decisive function is that the economic element rather than love. It indicated that the concept that money decides everything has permeated into the sanctuary of marriage.
