asAmeri2cans and Brit ons t o study foreign languages . Third, it is als o possiblethat in the l ong run, minority languages, or even all the other langua2ges of the world may disappear, greatly reducing linguistic and sub2sequently cultural diversity . The last consequence is p robably themost disturbing one as it is p regnantwith the erosi on of cultures, ofwhich language is the most i mportant part . Such a possibility is hos2tile t o the s ocial nature of humanity itself, as peop le cannot existwithout the realizati on of their own identity . Thiswill be further dis2cussed next .
The Drawbacks of Cultura l Globa l i za ti onHuman s ocieties across the gl obe have established p rogressive2ly cl oser contacts over many centuries, but recently the pace hasdramatically increased . Jet airp lanes, cheap telephone service, email, computers, huge oceangoing vessels, instant cap ital fl ows, allthese have made the world more interdependent than ever . Multina2ti onal corporati onsmanufacture p r oducts in many countries and sellt o consumers ar ound the world . Money, technol ogy and raw materialsmove evermore s wiftly acr oss nati onal borders . Al ong with p r oductsand finances, ideas and cultures circulate more freely . As a result, laws, economies, and social movements are for ming at the interna2ti onal level . Many politicians, academics, and j ournalists treat thesetrends as both inevitable and (on the whole) welcome . But for bil2li ons of the world’ s peop le, business - driven gl obalizati onmeans up2rooting old ways of life and threatening livelihoods and cultures .The aggressive s p read ofmarket economics and communicati ontechnol ogies - often under the contr ol ofWestern multinati onals -brings new challenges t o l ocal cultures and values in non - Westerns ocieties . Someti mes it seems as if a tidalwave of the worstWesternculture is creep ing acr oss the gl obe like a giant strawberry milk2shake oozing over the p lanet, with a flavor that is distinctly s weet, sickly and manifestly homogenous . Suddenly, peop le all over the non- Westernized regi ons of the world appear t o be i mbibing materia2listic and individualistic values p revi ously ass ociated with Westernculture . What exp lains this apparently abrup tWesternizati on? Onemaj or reas on is the structural change in the world economy: gl obal2izati on and the fl ood of goods dumped in poor countries that aremarketed by mass seductive
advertising which is blatantly superfi2cial but nonetheless successful in creating fresh desires in peop les oftraditi onal societies .
For s ome, es pecially the young, these new p roducts and contentwith new ideas can be exhilarating . Change may mean escape fromopp ressive traditi ons . It may als o bring new opportunities for cul2tures t o mingle in creative ways . However, there is genuine cause forconcern about the rate atwhich cultures are being undermined in aworld that is bound t ogether by ever - stronger economic ties .While an i mportant feature of gl obalizati on t oday is its de -Westernizati on (with the emergence of s ome non - Western nati ons- like Japan - as key act ors) , the reality is that in many i mpor2tant res pects,Western culture ( s ome would say American culture)remains the domineering force in the world t oday . Western culturefuels gl obalizati on t oday and, as it did during the age of i mperialismand col onizati on, hel p s t o reinforce the hegemony of theWest . Info
