Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 The Background of the Research
With the greatly strengthened trend of globalization, and the rapid development of scientifictechnology, the world wide contact among countries is increasingly close, the communicationmore frequent up. The knowledge economy and the rapid development of the iagehave promoted the international exchange and cooperation. And the increasing cooperation anddevelopment among countries inevitably facilitate the communication and cooperation amongdifferent cultures. The advanced scientific technology and many kinds of new means ofcommunication shorten the distance between people with different cultures and acceleratecultural globalization. Cultural globalization not only forms homogeneity and integration ofcultures, buthttps://www.51lunwen.org/languagethesis/ promotes compatibility of multiculturalism. But social complexity and culturalvariety make different cultures with different value judgments, so people with different culturesmay encounter misunderstanding, divergence and conflict in communication. Then how toeliminate communicative barriers and effectively avoid cultural conflicts for better interculturalcommunication is a hot topic which is discussed by people. The international society has stressedpeople's communicative ability of language. In some way, intercultural communication hasprobed into human's daily life deeply and become an important part of it.In the context of economic globalization, China has begun to be engaged in developingintercultural cooperation with other countries in the world. Especially after becoming a memberof WTO, successfully hosting the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and holding the ShanghaiWorld Expo in 2010, China is increasing its international economic cooperation and culturalexchanges with the outside world. Meanwhile, the English applied ability of Chinese people isfacing unprecedented challenges because of many new communicative means appearing. Thenew situation has proposed higher requirements to citizen's foreign language quality,intercultural awareness and communicative ability. English as an international language is themain intercultural communicative medium. Hence English should be not only as an importantlanguage skill to learn, to master and to use but as a channel to know about the deep culturalbackground knowledge behind this language for better intercultural communication.With the increasing development of international exchanges, it has become more and moreimportant to respect, recognize and appreciate foreign cultures. Foreign language Educationshould lay emphasis on the cultivation of students' intercultural awareness and ability. That is aconsensus which has been achieved on foreign language teaching around the world. In theeducational realm of China, more and more researchers and teachers have begun to realize the effect of cultural interference and the importance of fostering students' intercultural awarenessand ability. Foreign language education in senior high schools is an important process ofcultivating students' foreign language quality. According to SETCS, the overall goal of it is toenable students to further clarify the purpose of learning English, develop their ability ofindependent and cooperative learning, master effective learning strategies and cultivate theircomprehensive applied ability of language.
