Chapter 5 Major Findings and Analysis
5.1 Findings from Classroom Observations
Classroom observations are done to the third year and the second year senior high schoolEnglish teachers. Three third year and three second year English teachers are observed. Andeach is observed for two classes.Five aspects are included in the observations. They are teaching materials, teaching focus,teaching method, teaching strategy and attitude toward teaching. Table 4-1 shows what kind ofteaching material is preferred in the classroom teaching. The figure in the table is the mean ofthe two classes. In the second year of senior high, textbook (5) takes the absolute main position.Everything else gives way to it. The usual rule is that all the textbooks will be finished beforethe third year in order to save time for preparation of the coining examination in the third year.Teachers of key schools would mention the exam every now and then since they are experiencedabout the exam and know which part of the textbook is closer to the test items. The pace ofteaching is quickened in the second year. So we can see that the influence of NMET appearsearlier than the third year.

Conclusion
The author found from his classroom observations that there is an emphasis on preparingstudents for NMET examination. There is a focus on grammar points, multiple choice questions,and vocabulary with the introduction of new words by recitations and rote learning. Readingcomprehension is also paid much attention to. No emphasis is placed on speaking. This Englishteaching methodology seems to be a simple superposition of the class type that consists of"grammar lesson", “vocabulary lesson" and "reading class”,which lacks detailed explanations.Teachers tend to overlook leading the students to grasp the meaning of the language as a whole,but focus on vocabulary and sentence level explanations and training instead. As theexamination time draws closer, the teacher explains, there will be more training in the use ofpurely syntactic grammar-translation, and emphasis on the training of language structure andimproving syntax accuracy.
