Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research background
Vocabulary is the basic element of language. Jia Guanjie (2007) believes that foreign language teaching cannot be separated from English vocabulary teaching. Without vocabulary, there is no language; just like building, without building materials, it is useless to have the best foundation and drawings. Thus, vocabulary is an important part of language. However, it is undervalued in learners’ learning and teaching. Zimmerman (1997) holds that vocabulary is the central part of language and it is important for language learners. However, English vocabulary teaching and learning have been not paid enough attention to. The current situation of senior high school students' vocabulary teaching and learning is not very optimistic. According to English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School (2003), the students are asked to achieve the language knowledge target of grade seven: to understand different functions, intentions and attitudes of vocabulary in the text or discourse; to use words to name things, describe behaviors, illustrate concepts and express opinions, etc.; to master 2400-2500 words and 300-400 idioms or fixed collocations; and to understand the various meanings of words and the new words in daily life. According to National Matriculation English Test (NMET), the students are required to master about 3500 words and 400-500 idioms or fixed collocations, and to understand the various meanings of words and the new words i n daily life. However, the students mainly remember the words mechanically again and again. Due to the lack of effective methods of vocabulary learning, students feel it boring to learn English vocabulary and gradually lose interest and confidence in English vocabulary learning.

1.2 Research purpose and significance
Vocabulary is the foundation of the language. D. A. Wilkins (2003) holds that without grammar, one cannot express a lot of things; without vocabulary, one can express nothing. According to English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School (2003), senior high school students are asked to use vocabulary to describe more complex things, behavior, characteristics, and concepts; and to express their different opinions.
