Chapter One Introduction
This chapter makes a brief introduction of the research, which consists of thebackground, significance and the layout of the study. With the economic globalizationbooming, Chinese students are required to possess high-qualified English languagecompetence. As one of the most significant language skills, writing has been paidgreat attention to. Therefore, there is no doubt that English writing plays a vital role inEnglish teaching as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language(EFL) classes in senior high school.
1.1 Research background
As a global language, English is used the most widely and plays an importantrole in international communication. In order to adapt to the globalization andimprove students’ ability of cross-cultural communication, it is urgent to cultivatetheir comprehensive capacity for English. English comprehensive capabilities includelistening, speaking, reading and writing. Among the four abilities, writing acts as away of transinformation, which reflects students’ comprehensive ability of applyingthe language. Besides, writing is the most important skill of the output. Meanwhile, itis also the most difficult skill to master in learning process.According to English Curriculum Standard for High School issued in 2011,ordinary high school graduates are required to reach the following requirements.Firstly, students can write coherent and complete
essays to narrative things andexpress their ideas clearly. Secondly, students can write the abstract according to thetext. Thirdly, compositions which are completed by students should be smooth and inthe stylistic norms. Lastly, students can
write essays or reports based on theinformation provided in words or pictures. However, there is still a gap from seniorhigh school students’ English writing level to the requirements of curriculum standard.Due to the influence of mother tongue, many students’ English compositions haveobvious traces of Chinglish, which may lead to bad writing phenomena, such asambiguity, inaccurate word order or chaotic sentence structure. In addition, a largenumber of students fear to write compositions and refuse to do writing exercises.Apart from some inevitable writing examinations, they escape practicing writing atordinary times.

1.2 Significance of the research
This research project is a four-month teaching experiment for two classes inNo.1 Senior High School of Jinzhou. The research aims to explore whether CA is animportant factor in English writing and whether CA teaching method can improvestudents’ performance more effectively. Furthermore, this

Linguistic theoryrefers to making contrast between different languages, which is a scientific researchfinding with comprehensive contrastive analysis of various languages in the world(Wang, 1996).The achievement of contrastive study in China has shown that CA is an effectiveapproach in foreign language learning and teaching since the conditions that maycause difficulty in learning can be predicted and described in advance.
