Chapter One Introduction
It is well known that reading plays an important role in college entrance examination, and it occupies an significant position in foreign language teaching. Schools attach importance to reading, while the academic achievement of students is not optimistic. So, it is urgently required to look for a new way to improve students’ reading ability in senior high school. The author comes up with the application of Formative
Assessment in senior high school English reading teaching. This chapter has three parts : research background, research significance and purpose, and structure of the
thesis.
1.1 Background of the study
Assessment is divided into summative assessment and Formative Assessment. Summative assessment focuses on the result of study, while Formative Assessment lays emphasis on the process of learning. In our country, summative assessment is the main assessment in senior high school for a long time, and Formative Assessment is seldom applied in the process of teaching and learning. In senior high school, the assessment of summative assessment mainly focuses on the tests in the middle and at the end of the learning. Teachers do not pay attention to the process of students’ learning and their attitude of study. Summative assessment cares about the grades that students achieve, and it considers grades as the only standard to judge students’ ability. There are several problems about summative assessment in the process of teaching. It overemphasizes on selection, and ignores ability’s development of students. With a single evaluation index, it stresses the result of learning and ignores the investigation of learning process. Singularity of the assessment leads to a passive position for students. Students blame their lack of confidence on the assessment. Reading, considered as the basic skill of the four essential skills, holds an momentous position in English learning and teaching. For many students, reading is regarded as one of the important skills in language learning. Reading expresses ideas and is a way to transfer messages from the writer to the reader. Reading comprehension is ability by which we can get ideas from the writer, accumulate common sense, and make our life more colorful.
