Chapter 1 Int roduction
First of all, the researcher states the background of the study in the first part ofthis chapter. And then, the significance and the purpose of the study are illustrated inthe second and third part. Last but not least, the researcher introduces some details inthe overall structure of the
thesis.
1.1 Background of the Study
Hallidy and Hassan helped each other and cooperated to publish the book ofCohesion in English in 1976. Since the publication of the book, the theories ofcohesion and coherence have attracted more and more attention from linguisticscholars in different schools at home and abroad. Those linguists give differentinterpretations of cohesion and coherence in different theoretical perspectives. It’snecessary and meaningful to study the instruction of cohesion and coherence inEnglish writing in senior high school.For most Chinese learners, English writing always has been a significant anddifficult skill to improve. According to writing goals set by the English curriculumstandard for senior high school students, students are demanded to write cohesive andcoherent compositions where the views are clearly and completely expressed.Therefore, Students should not only study grammar and vocabulary, but also study toorganize discourse structure.However, current English writing teaching mainly focuses on vocabulary andgrammar rather than cohesion and coherence. Teachers always overemphasize errorsof the usage of language points but ignore errors of the overall structure and errors ofdiscourse coherence and cohesion in compositions. Although students have alreadyhad ability to apply a large vocabulary and grammar knowledge, their compositionsalways are loose in structure, lacking in clarity, with poor consistency.The effect of this traditional teaching method on the improvement of students’English writing ability is not obvious, especially in aspect of cohesion and coherence.Students’ writing ability nearly is not satisfactory in senior high school.Therefore, the researcher tries to apply the theory of discourse cohesion andcoherence in English writing teaching in senior high school, which focuses onimproving students’ English writing ability.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Furthermore, this research is of great significance. According to background ofthe study, it is obvious that the conventional and examination-oriented writingteaching way fails to provide students with an effective way of writing learning.Students lack cohesion and coherence in their compositions. Therefore, theintroduction of cohesion and coherence is very necessary for students’ writinglearning.Secondly, the introduction of the theory of discourse cohesion and coherence inEnglish writing teaching, on the one hand, it promotes students to think highly ofcohesive devices in English writing learning, on the other hand, it enhances students’awareness of cohesion and coherence. Moreover, it helps students to skillfully applyvarious cohesive devices in their compositions, so as to improve students’ writingability and enhance students’ interests in writing learning. students realize that theynot only master the usage of grammar and vocabulary but also learn to use a variety ofcohesive devices to clearly express their thoughts in their compositions.Thirdly, the instruction of cohesion and coherence in a separate writing class, itis able to change teachers’ traditional teach
