Introduction

This booklet is designed to help you with Researching and Writing your essays on Film within your courses at the University of Leicester. Please read it carefully and, where there are exercises to do, carry these out. You will find that your work will improve and you will feel more confident in what you undertake. Some of the approaches, ideas and subjects covered in this booklet may not be new to you but I do advise that you consider these nevertheless and help them guide your studies and assessment, especially as many of you will not have studied film dormally before.

Do remember that when you work is being assessed certain proficiencies are being sought and if you learn from the methods and instructions set out here, you will find it easier to achieve, for example, for a First (A) or Distinction ”Excellent work demonstrating independence of thinking/research.
