1.1 Research Background 研究背景

The sequence may be very short--perhaps only two or threesentences--but, because of the way the sentences have been put in order and linked together,they form a coherent whole. They form what we call a `text'.” Writing is a kind of text,https://www.51lunwen.org/guidelines/  canexpress the writers’ ideas or feelings and it is also an indispensable skill to communication.Among the five parts- listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, writing ismore difficult than others. It needs the readers to do more writing, translation and do moreexercises so as to write well. At times, we organize a sequence of sentences, which arearranged in a certain order and put together in a certain way, and that may be a short passage.Sometimes, there are only several sentences. At the same time, it forms a coherent text.Writing is to organize a text which can express the author’ idea, meanwhile, it is acommunicative process. Coherence and cohesion contribute to a good writing. Cohesion playsan important role in writing.In China, more and more learners and instructors realize the importance of writing, andthey spend lots of time and money on improving writing. But in the CET-4 exam, we findwriting is still the most difficult for the students. They are weak in writing and don’t knowhow to improve it. So the thesis mainly uses the cohesion theory to analyze non-majorEnglish college students’ writings. Through the study, we can find the errors in students’writings and analyze the reasons why they often make errors. Meanwhile, we study therelationship of the use of cohesive devices and the writing quality. The final aim is to train thestudents to master how to form the relationship of sentences and words and the logicalstructure of texts. It’s necessary for the students to use cohesive devices effectively in order toachieve unity and consistency. Last we can give learners some implications and strategies inwriting.


1.2 The Purpose and Significance of the Thesis 论文的意义和目的
