Your assignment is made up of a number of elements. These elements build cumulatively into a portfolio of work ( see frequently asked questions below) that evidences your investigation into a contemporary international trade and investment issue or problem. It will also demonstrate your ability to research appropriately, identify relevant academic theories and concepts to support your inquiry and discussion, and your ability to adopt a critical and analytical approach to your chosen subject matter.

There is no prescribed format to the structure of the portfolio – that is up to you to decide. The only stipulation is that the portfolio is easy to follow in relation to the assignment brief. Equally, there is no prescribed word count for the portfolio. The information provided on word count below is indicative and not mandatory.

You will be required to bring the different parts of your portfolio into class at required times. We will be using this information in some of the learning activities in the seminar sessions. If you do not bring in your work at the required times, or if it is not in a completed stage at this point, you will lose 5 marks from your final mark. The final submission of your portfolio is in week 9. This should be treated as a deadline in the normal way.

In terms of assessment criteria for the final portfolio, you should consult the module guide which explains these in detail.

TASKS

1 Read the chapter provided from the book “The Undercover Economist” by Tim Harwood. This will provide you with some ideas about current issues in trade and trade policy. Reading this will stimulate your thinking – you may wish also to read other books/texts at this point to help you decide on something you are interested in researching and investigating further. After you’ve undertaken this preliminary reading, identify an international trade and investment policy issue or problem that you want to investigate further in much more detail. Produce a clear statement of this international trade and investment policy issue one side of A4 paper or no more than 600 words. This is the first part of your portfolio.

Deadline – bring your piece of work into the seminar in week 2.
Recommended word count – 600 words.

2 Identify and produce a summary of the relevant academic theories and concepts that are useful to understanding your problem or issue in more detail. These may be theories or concepts relating to international trade, international investment, international business strategy, international political economy, and so on. They may be taken from the academic literature on microeconomics, macroeconomics, political science or international business. There is no word limit in producing this summary, but a recommendation is made below. You should focus on making a clear summary of the theories/concepts and produce a statement describing how and in what way they are relevant to your chosen problem/issue.

Deadline – bring your work into the seminar in week 5.
Recommended word count – 750 words.
