1.1 Motivations of the Study
Nowadays，English, as an international language, was widely used in the world. WithChina's entry to WTO and the tendency of globalization, personal letters, business letters andcontracts are frequently being exchanging between companies and countries in the world. As oneof the most important written media to express information and emotion，English writing hasbeen an indispensable part of our life. On the other hand，it also plays an equally important rolein English learning as well as reading, listening and speaking. For the two reasons above，theability of writing in English clearly and properly gives students an enormous advantage in life，not only to the present study，but also to the future development. Students who can expresshimself/herself properly in written English usually get better results in National MatriculationEntrance Test (NMET) and also get better jobs in the future. Therefore, how to improve students'writing skills has become one of the major problems for teachers of English in China, especiallyfor the teachers in senior middle school. However，it proves that writing skills are the mostchallenging one to acquire. In Chinese senior middle schools, students are merely good at takingtests and expert in learning grammar. They often assume the text produced will naturally be agood one if they write grammatically correct sentences. If they are required to revise theirwritings，they are most likely to correct the grammatical errors within sentences, which can beeasily corrected. But they seldom grasp the cohesive skills, which also play an important role inEnglish writing. As Walters (1983) points out, writing is the last and perhaps the most difficultskill for students to leam. This is especially true with English learners in senior middle schoolwho have received formal education for many years but still fail to write as coherently as nativesdo.

1.2 Further Requirement for Writing Skills in English Curriculum Criterion
Because of the importance of writing, the educational administration and experts takefurther requirement for writing skills in English curriculum criterion of the middle schoolEnglish course. The English curriculum criterion points out that the overall objective of English teaching is to cultivate students' integrated English skills. Listening，speaking, reading andwriting are the four basic and essential language skills to form comprehensive language ability.Therefore, writing，as one of the four language skills，receives more attention than ever since.
