5.1 Acquisition Order of EEC
The acquisition order of English existential construction is a crucial topic of thepresent study. The author here makes a specific description and analysis of thecollected data in order to demonstrate the acquisition order of EEC by senior highschool students.In last chapter, two kinds of tests are borrowed to stimulate students’ output ofEnglish existential construction. There are 20 sentences of Test 2 and at least 10sentences in Test 1, so each student should at least hand in 34 sentences of Englishexistential construction. Students from Group 1 who represent the primary standardproduce 40 sentences on average with an error percentage of 28%. Group 2 studentswho represent the average level present 40 sentences averagely which include 25%errors. The result of Group 3 is 38 sentences with a much lower percentage of 19%errors.

Conclusion


This study aims to explore the acquisition of English existential constructionamong senior high school students. Based on the theories of Language Transfer andSubset Principle, the author analyzes the collected data from the two designed testsand gets the following findings.The acquisition order of English existential construction among senior highschool is: “there be” > “there + unaccusative verb” > “there + relative clause” > “there+ infinitive”. To be specific, it can be listed as: “there is + NP” ≥ “there are + NP” ≥“there + modal verb” ≥ “there are + NPs and NP” > “there is + NP and NPs” >“there+ unaccusative verb + NP” > “there + relative clause” > “there + infinitive” > “there +for…to”. English existential constructions with complicated structures are muchharder for students to acquire than those with simple structures.The subject-predicate agreement and the misuse of pivotal sentences in Englishexistential construction are considered to be the problematic areas among Chinesesenior high school students. Some students forget to follow the Principle of proximitywhen deal with the structure of “there is + NP and NPs”, and pivotal sentences can befound among their answers of the structure of “there + relative clause”, which actuallyare not allowed in English grammar.
