Chapter Two Literature review


2.1 Memetics theory and its development
Memetics theory is based on Darwin’s theory of evolution, and the core of memeticsis that the acquisition and transmission of culture are achieved through imitation, and thebasic unit of imitation is meme. Memetics theory provides a new angle of view forlanguage teaching. The word “meme” is originally derived from the book The Selfish Meme (1976)written by the scientist Richard Dawkins. He coins the item from the Greek word mimeme,meaning “imitation” and describes memes as units of cultural transmission which'propagate themselves in the meme pool by ... a process which, in the broad sense, can becalled imitation' (Richard Dawkins, 1976: 192). The Oxford English Dictionary defines ameme as follows: 'meme (mi:m), n. Biol. (shortened from mimeme ... that which is imitated,after GENE n.). An element of a culture that may be considered to be passed on bynon-genetic means, esp. imitation' (Blackmore, 1998). Imitation is the essentialcharacteristic for meme replication. A meme is survived by replication and propagation,and language is its vehicle. When a meme communicates with other individuals, it must bedrawn out of the stored memes in the memory, and enter the objective materials that can beperceptible.

2.2 English writing teaching approaches
There are different English writing teaching approaches dominating for differentperiods. In this section, we will have a general review of two teaching approaches to knowhow they are manipulated and what effect they have on English writing teaching. The product approach believes that students can make great progress by practicingdiligently and grasping the writing skills. It concentrates on the language knowledge inwriting and emphasizes the importance of the imitation, which is still of great importancein current teaching, especially language teaching. However, the imitation in this approachis too inflexible. It should be merged into the process of creative writing. And thedisadvantage of the product approach is that students can’t get the guidance and help of theteacher in the process of writing. The teacher judges the composition good or not by thewriting production finished at once. During the process of compositions commenting, the teacher spends most time and energy on grammar mistake correction. The students areasked to drill grammar rules that are separated from the real life. Therefore, writing coursesmake students feel anxiety gradually. Most students only care about the marks and ignorethe teacher’s revision part. Over time, students will lose the opportunity to do selferror-correction and can’t get indeed improved.
