thesis, teachers’ professional development has become a common feature of educationreform and social development. In China, the reform of new English curriculum isflourishing, so English teacher is facing many challenges and confusion. This chapterpresents the background, purpose and significance of the research based on the status andproblems.
1.1 Research background
At present, new English curriculum standard in high school is being practiced, whichbrings English teachers severe challenges, while also provides them a platform of selfdevelopment. The profound changes in the curriculum reform will be mainly reflected inthe changes of educational concepts, educational methods and teaching behavior ofteachers, which all need exploring actively in practice. However, with the new Englishcurriculum reform implemented step by step, English teachers’ professional developmentseriously conflicts with the lack of professional guidance and training, which leads to thetraining tasks of English teachers heavier, wider, but the implementation of the newcurriculum reform is not ideal. Neither depending on expert instruction, nor massivelysending senior English teachers out to study is realistic. Under the situation of new Englishcurriculum reform, senior school English teachers have to develop the professionalcompetence to adapt to English teaching. Teachers’ development is very important tostudents’ English learning, so is English education in China. Teachers’ ability relates to theimplementation of new English Curriculum, but it can not be cultivated in a short time.Teachers’ qualities as indispensable parts of teachers’ professional development have beenheatedly discussed and studied both at home and abroad. Many scholars take differentviews to investigate what makes a qualified professional teacher.

1.2 Research purpose and significance
English education is taken seriously in China, which needs a large number ofqualified English teachers. At present, the number and quality of English teachers can notmeet the need of English education. What’s more, owing to the high school enrollment ofstudents’ expansion and English reform in the college entrance examination, senior highschool English teachers face a huge challenge. The aims of this paper are to study thestatus of senior high school English teachers’ professional development in Jinzhou city andexplore the reasons. In Jinzhou, English teaching in senior high school still focuses oncollege entrance examination, so English teachers are required to emphasize test-orientedlanguage skills. Some teachers ignore listening and speaking, which brings about theimbalance of knowledge and skills of students and English teachers. English teachers’consciousness on scientific research and professional development is weak and many of them believe that teaching knowledge is their main purpose. Teachers’ professionaldevelopment directly relates to English teaching, so it is important to improve Englishteachers’ professional development.
