In a fixed class duration, the longer timeteacher takes for explanation, the fewer opportunities students can have to practisetheir spoken English. Give enough time, students may lose their interests in classroomparticipation and be accustomed to playing the role of audience, while teachersthemselves have been habituated to this phenomenon, then the classroom atmospherewill become more and more depressing. As a result, students’ manifestation ofboredom, apathy, inattention and silence are prevalent. The results from classroomobservation show a strong tendency for students in this research to remain silent inEnglish classes.

Conclusion
The last chapter comes to the conclusion of this study. First it generalizes themajor research findings, and then some limitations of this research are listed down.The last part presents some suggestions for future studies.In this research, the author has made a survey on senior high school students’silence in English classes. With three instruments employed, the present situation ofstudents’ English classroom silence is first investigated, and the influencing factors ofthis phenomenon are mainly probed. Then based on the analysis of research resultsand discussions, the author puts forward some suggestions to break the silentphenomenon. The main finding are listed as follows:Firstly, from the classroom observations, it can be perceived that students’classroom silence is a prevailing phenomenon in senior high school. Analyzed fromthe quantitative data coded in the sample classes, the teacher dominates the classroomdiscourse and talks most of the class time, while students speak less than one third ofthe class duration. In the meantime, the notes of the observation scheme show theEnglish classroom atmosphere is rather depressing, and classroom activities mostlyseem like a routine process. Most students reveal their negative attitudes towards theteacher’s questioning and show reluctance to participate in class interactions. Actingas the knowledge giver, the teacher still adopts the traditional teaching way withoutenough long waiting time and proper feedbacks. The interview results also confirmthis tough situation.
