Chapter I Introduction

1.1 Research Background
In China, students learn English as their foreign language. The New EnglishCurriculum Standard for Senior High School (Empirical) (the Ministry of Education,2003) sets the whole objective as to train students’ comprehensive language abilities,especially communication skills. However, with students’ problem of “dumb English”and “low efficiency” in English learning, most senior high school EFL teachers inChina meet a terrible phenomenon “silence”. The successful English teaching isachieved by the coordination of teachers’ proper guidance with students’ positiveparticipation, as well as the effective communication between them (Shang Haijing,2014). Students’ silence in English class greatly frustrates teachers’ passion inteaching and hinders the smooth teaching process. As a result, improving students’comprehensive ability has become the empty talk.Classroom is the important and essential land for most high school students tolearn English (Hou Yanfang, 2005). However, in the process of educational practice,various problems in the classroom have been exposed: students’ low interests inlearning and lack of enthusiasm in participation; the boring classroom atmosphere;teachers’ cramming teaching and neglecting students’ subjectivity and autonomy; theunequal and tense teacher-student relationship and so on. With a great educationalreform going on, the student-centered idea has been deeply rooted in the hearts ofpeople. The National Plan for Medium-and Long-Term Educational Reform andDevelopment (2010-2020) explicitly states the main body of students and the leadingrole of the teacher. Students’ initiative should be given full play and ensuring theirhealthy growth should be both the starting point and ultimate goal of all school work.

1.2 Research Aims
The widespread phenomenon of students’ silence in high school English classesnot only leads to learners’ low productivity, but brings negative impact on Englishteaching. Classroom silence has always attracted the attention of experts, scholars andfront-line teachers. At the same time, the New National Curriculum Standardexplicitly indicates that students’ development should be the fundamental purpose ofeducation and the interaction between teachers and students should be the core of anyteaching process. Knowledge-imparting and capability-developing should benecessarily unified in practical English teaching. This research is not only supportedby front-line teachers, but also a response to the call of the New Curriculum Criterion.The purpose of this research is to obtain a comprehensive understanding ofsenior school students’ English classroom silence. The author sets out to explore thepresent situation of senior school students’ silence in English classes throughinvestigation, then analyzes the causes of this phenomenon, and finally, puts forwardseveral teaching suggestions according to its various reasons. The author hopes thatthe results of this study will help reduce the occurrence of students’ classroom silenceand even break silence with the aim of optimizing teaching so that students canbravely participate in class interaction on a voluntary basis and get their learningefficiency and integrated skills improved. It is believed that the findings of this thesiswill make some valuable contributions to the improvement of teaching and learning,as well as the future teaching reform.
