Chapter One Introduction
Nowadays English plays an increasingly significant role in the world. At thesame time, English learning also matters much for senior high school students.English writing is one of the four basic abilities in the process of English learning.Compared with other three abilities, English writing is not only the most essential butalso the most difficult skill for high school students. High school students often havedifficulties in English writing. Worse more, they don’t know how to start a Englishcomposition. On the other hand, the scores of English writing take a great amount inthe English examination. If those students feel anxious or nervous in the process ofEnglish writing, they might get poor scores or be afraid of English writing.Thinking about the reality of English writing of high school students, it isimperative to make a survey about English writing anxiety of high school students.This research is going to investigate the general situation of high school students’English writing anxiety and the causes of it. Last but not least, the author tries to givesome suggestions for both English teachers and high school students. Thesesuggestions are concerned with how to reduce high school students’ English writinganxiety. And it is expected that these suggestions are helpful for high school studentsto keep a positive attitude towards English writing. This chapter consists of four parts.The first part is about the background of the study. The second part is about thepurpose of the study. The third part is about the significance of the study and the lastpart is about the organization of the
thesis. This part is a general description of thestudy.
1.1 The Background of the Study
In the contemporary society, with the rapid development of world economy andculture, communication between different countries is increasing at an amazing rate.In order to communicate fluently with each other without obstacles, people turn toEnglish for help. English has been a global and common language for people all overthe world to exchange and communicate their information. Under this circumstance,people begin to pay much attention to learning English.English writing is an essential and necessary part of language learning andteaching. English writing is also a fundamental skill which can represent the ability oflearners’ practical application of language knowledge. The level of English writingability can truly represent and show the learners’ overall English proficiency. Englishwriting needs learners to equip with enough language knowledge such as basicEnglish vocabulary and moderate grammar. In the process of English writing, learnerscan put what they have learned into reality in the form of English passages orcompositions. At the same time, learners can find out their weaknesses andconsolidate their English knowledge.For high school students, the score of English writing not only takes a greatproportion in their mid or final English exam, but also matters much in the CollegeEntrance Examination. College Entrance Examination is usually considered as themost vital and difficult exam for high school students. Therefore, it is of greatimportance to master the skills of English writing. But there are some factors thatimpede the English writing and English writing anxiety is one of them.
