The first block of sessions focuses on the qualitative semiotic approach to analysing texts, the second block introduces approaches to analysing websites and the final block introduces the quantitative method of content analysis.

The concluding session of the module (Week 10) will discuss how methods can be combined in research projects and it will also provide you with an opportunity to discuss and ask questions about your coursework.

COURSEWORK ONE:

The first will be a shorter piece, which involves applying methods for analysing Internet websites. Please choose a website of interest (this can be a personal page, a commercial page, discussion group, whatever you like). Familiarise yourself with the readings on analysing Internet websites and groups. Using this literature analyse your website of choice as either (i) multimodal discourse, or as (ii) part of a social network.

In the coursework please:

• Discuss why you have chosen the particular website for analysis.
• Analyse the website using insights from your readings on  methods, also briefly consult literature pertinent to making sense of the website that you have chosen
• Discuss your findings
• Discuss the strengths and shortcomings of the methods used
• Support the claims that you make about the methods and about the websites using relevant literature.

Your coursework should not be longer than 2000 words.

COURSEWORK TWO:

The second piece of coursework is a longer piece which will involve applying semiotic analysis and content analysis to music videos in order to assess the representation of social groups and categories and the variety of meanings that music videos offer in relation to these groups and categories. You will use the findings from both research methods in conjunction to produce an analysis of how particular social groups are represented in a music video. In preparation for your lecture on the semiotic analysis of music videos you will be asked to email a link to a music video of your choice to the lecturer. During the lecture a selection of these videos will be discussed by the group and you will be given time to begin a semiotic analysis of the visual content of your chosen video on an individual basis. In your private study time you will be expected to develop this analysis in more detail and use relevant literature to explain your analysis.

Later in the course you will have three lectures on a quantitative method of textual analysis: content analysis. In the second of these lectures you will use the same music video to produce a content analysis of the lyrics which assesses how groups and categories are represented by them.
