Welcome to Textual Analysis Research Techniques. This is one of the core modules you will take this semester. It is compulsory because of the direct relation it has with the dissertation you are currently planning.

This module explores different research techniques and methods for analysing media and cultural texts. It is vitally important to learn how to analyse media and cultural texts because, not only are they ubiquitous in contemporary culture and engaging with them fills much of our time, but they also mediate much of our knowledge about the world which extends beyond our lived social experience. There are many different techniques which can be used to assess the range of meanings that these texts offer and the particular ways in which they represent the world. This course will demonstrate how different research techniques can be applied to a range of media and cultural texts from websites to music videos. For those of you planning a dissertation which is concerned with analysing the nature and content of media texts this module will provide you with useful tools and skills to do so.

Some postgraduate programmes in media and culture teach research methods in the abstract, divorcing them from both theoretical and conceptual issues and hands-on experience of using them. In opposition to this we maintain that the best way to become skilled at using research methods, to understand their strengths and limitations, and to see the ways in which they might be combined, is to put them into practice. Your coursework will involve applying the research approaches that are introduced to, you both in isolation and in combination, to a particular research question.

The work you do on this module will not just concern the successful practical application of methods, it will also involve exploring the key epistemological issues and debates surrounding the various approaches. You will not only consider how to apply a particular method, but when it is most appropriate to do so and what a particular approach offers in terms of providing knowledge about particular media and cultural texts.

This module will introduce you to two kinds of approach to textual analysis qualitative (based on assessing of the meaning of a particular text) and quantitative (based on numerically assessing the nature and content of a particular text). This module gives you practical experience of the main methods used in collecting and presenting both kinds of data.
