THE SOCIAL STATUS OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS IN THE U.S SINCE THE CIVIL WAR
Abstract
Because of racial discrimination and racial repression, the blacks living in ghettos suffered from low employment rates, poor life, and poor education for their children, so many social problems were brought about with its constant development like this,. Every Afro-American was destined to be treated partially even since he was born. Afro-Americans lived with double identities in American, and they were Americans, but in fact, they were treated as second-class citizens. This kind of social condition made Afro-American have a bitter self-consciousness and lack of confidence. Afro-Americans were weak groups in politics, economy and culture, so they had to hook on to white American society. White Americans loved their attachment as well https://www.51lunwen.org/civillaw/2010/0612/1429438901.html as hated their attachment. They loved it because they could get cheap labors and exploit them in economy; they hated it just because they were unwilling to come into contact with those ugly blacks, and they disgusted blacks in ideology. In order to survive from the unfair society, most blacks tried their best to improve their educational levels and skills. They just wanted to settle in the dominant American society, but they were rejected, discriminated and oppressed in every field because of serious racial discrimination, which made the backs who wanted to settle in the dominant American society split apart: some blacks took things as they were, and considered themselves as slaves; some blacks wore masks to struggle with whites to protect themselves; https://www.51lunwen.org/mediamanagement/ the others started to be cynical because of disappointment and Pessimism, and they didn’t want to settle in the dominant American society any more, and they hoped to return to Africa and establish their own country without racial discrimination and racial repression.
