摘要:The thesis also examines the current attitude of Hong Kong residents towards the three codes. By describing the political and social factors that influence language status, the author maintains that the prestigious status of English in Hong Kong is being gradually replaced by Chinese while English is retaining its importance in international business.

 The status of languages in a multilingual society
1.1.1 Notion of multilingualism and language status          
Multilingualism is a worldwide phenomenon.Functional bilingualism or multilingualism at the individual and societal level is common throughout the world.According to“The Penguin Dictionary of Language”,multilingualism refers to a situation where a speech community(or an individual)makes use of several languages(Crystal,1999:190).Sridhar(2001:46)suggests multilingualism can be studied both as an individual and as a societal phenomenon.When multilingualism is viewed as a societal phenomenon,one is concerned with issues such as the status and roles of the languages in a given society,attitudes toward languages, determinants of language choice,and the symbolic and practical uses of languages. The status of a language,on the other hand,depends on what people can do with a language,legally,culturally,economically and politically(Mackey,1989:4). Ammon(1989:26)defines the status of a language as its social position in a social system,as status is frequently interpreted as“high”or“low”functions.The status decision determines which language or languages are to be used in various public functions,by government,the legal system,the media,and the Educational system.
1.1.2 The status of languages and social context
Language reflects both the physical and social environments of a society. The historical change of a society can be revealed in the change of the language situation (陈原,2000:5,translated by the author).Languages normally function in a social matrix and societies depend heavily on language as a medium of interaction (Fishman,1968:6).It is therefore appropriate to expect that the status of a language in a multilingual society is closely related with various social factors such as politics, economy,culture and education.The social and political context influences language status in various ways,for example,in the designation of an official language or a bilingual’s choice of language.In addition,the larger social and political context can affect social attitudes toward particular languages and language varieties,as well as individual motivation to learn a language.
