In 2006 a data released by the United Nations Stated showed there are almost 62 million workers all over the world, whereas the number was 24 million in 1990. Because of this amazing increase, the role of human resource management in international business has been more and more significant. As is known to all, recruitment and selection are the two most important key factors in human resource management. This assay aims to give a critical review on the developments in recruitment and selection.

Firstly, this essay will give a general overview of human resource management, then the second part is the information of recruitment and selection. Subsequently it will make some analysis on the changing employment relationships. Then the theoretical developments on recruitment and selection will be elaborated. Analysis of methods on recruitment and selection lies in the fifth part of the essay. Finally it will give a critical reviewon developments in recruitment and selection.

2 The General Overview of Human Resource Management

In an organization, human resource management plays a role to facilitate the most effective use of people to achieve organizational and individual goals (Nadler, 1989).

Planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling represent the management process (Torrington et al, 2011). Activities like recruiting, selecting, training, compensating, appraising and developing are included in human resource management (Bach and Sisson, 2000).


2.1 Information about Recruitment and Selection

Recruitment and selection are two of the key activities of human resource management which also belongs to staffing. As is known to all, overall aim of recruitment and selection is to obtain the quantity and quality of employees required to fulfill the objectives of the organization. However, distinguishes exist between recruitment and selection.


2.2 The General Overview of Recruitment and Selection

Recruitment is the part of the process aiming to find the applicants; it is a positive action by management, going into the labor market to communicating opportunities and information to generate interest. Selection is the choosing among applicants of jobs. It is largely a ‘negative’ process, eliminating unsuitable applicants (Langbert, 2000). Predicting future job performance, matching to person specification, deciding who is the best match is the main task for selection. Recruitment as well as selection is the insignificant part in human resource management.


2.3 The Importance of Recruitment and Selection

As is elaborated before, recruitment and selection are two of the key activities of human resource management. Details about importance of recruitment and selection will be explained as following.
