Learning from Architects: The Difference between Knowledge Visualization and Information Visualization
University of St. Gallen
Abstract
This paper 代写留学生论文focuses on an aspect which has beenneglected, but which is decisive: The transfer ofknowledge to different stakeholders; especially thetransfer of insights derived from informationvisualization tools. In knowledge management thetransfer of knowledge is a core process, which can beimproved by using our innate abilities to process visualrepresentations. The potential of visualizations aremanifold. But business managers miss a holisticframework on the use of visualization methods forinformation exploration and communication tasks. Thispaper analyzes how architects use visualizations toamplify cognition and to transfer knowledge. Itintroduces a mediating framework that brings togetherisolated research directions and defines the newresearch focus knowledge visualization. Knowledgevisualization examines the use of visualizations for thetransfer of knowledge between at least two peoples. Wefound that the new focus is decisive and has implicationsfor researchers in information visualization andknowledge management.
Keywords: knowledge visualization, informationvisualization, knowledge transfer, knowledgemanagement.
1.Introduction: The Need for Knowledge Visualization
The transfer of knowledge is a core process anddifficult to manage [1]. For the transfer of knowledge thefollowing difficulties need to be solved: Information depth: Trade off between an overview anddetails that need to be communicated. Limited time: Limited time, attention and capacity ofthe recipients. Different background: Different cognitivebackgrounds and difficulties of decision makers tounderstand the novel information visualization tools. Relevance: Providing the relevant information todifferent stakeholders.
Today managers only use few visualization types,i.e. PowerPoint presentations, diagrams or clip arts forinformation exploration and for the transfer of knowledge. Result: The need for informationvisualization.
The last twenty years various informationvisualization methods were invented. However it hasbeen neglected to link these methods to the backgroundof managers and to the knowledge management lifecycle. As a result managers have difficulties to adaptthese new methods. What is missing, is a mediatingframework for the use of visualization methods fordifferent tasks that concern managers; starting frominformation exploration and ending with the transfer ofknowledge. The methods should be customized to therecipients' cognitive background and information need. This missing framework would help managers to find themost promising visualization method for the individualtask. Result: The need for knowledge visualization.
Knowledge visualization examines methods toreduce the predominant problems of managers: Information overload: Decision Makers cannotidentify the relevant information. Misinterpretation: Decision makers cannotunderstand, evaluate and interpret the information. Misuse: Decision makers cannot use or misuse theinformation for decision making.
Information visualization scientists can learn fromarchitects: Architects ashttps://www.51lunwen.org/liuxuelunwendx/ generalists are experts in thetransfer of knowledge between specialists from differentfields (engineers, workers, lawyers, customers).
