Determinants of capital structure in Chinese banks

Abstract

With China's accession to WTO and opening up the financial sector, as soon as possible to establish a modern commercial banking system to enhance the competitiveness of https://www.51lunwen.org/jrfx/ state-owned commercial banks becomes an important task faced by China. This requires Chinese commercial banks continuing to improve their market competitiveness, and constantly improve the governance structure, optimize the capital structure in response to market competition and the strong impact of foreign bank entry.

This dissertation first by the guidance of the decision of capital structure theory, combined with the special capital structure of banks, analyzed the determinants of the capital structure in Chinese commercial bank. Secondly, according to the above analysis, coupled with the actual situation in China, this dissertation conducted the empirical study of the micro- factors of the capital structure in commercial banks. Empirical study using principal component analysis and multiple regression analysis method, by the use of the annual reports data disclosed in 16 commercial banks from 2005 to 2009, established the capital structure model of commercial banks. The empirical results show that bank size, growth, financial distress costs, income tax, capital costs are positively correlated with the debt ratio; profitability, non-debt tax shields are negatively correlated with the debt ratios. Finally, this dissertation based on the empirical results and the characteristics of Chinese commercial banks, made some suggestions from four aspects: to replenish capital from multiple sources, to improve asset quality and reduce bad loan ratio, tax relief to supplement the capital, to strengthen financial supervision, for optimization of the capital structure in commercial banks.
