摘要:As the role of Science and Technology becomes more and more important, ESTbegins to get attention of linguists from different perspectives. It is widelyacknowledged that characterized by its high complexity and abstraction, EST is oftenconsidered to be an obstacle for students in the study of English.

Chapter One Introduction


Through out history, scholars from different perspectives, such as psycholinguisticperspective, cognitive perspective have tried their best to promote language teachingand learning. As a result many theories, for example psycholinguistic theory,cognitive linguistic theory have been constructed and applied to language teaching.This thesis, which is concerned with the application of nominalization of ESTdiscourse in College English Teaching, conducts the study from the cognitiveperspective. And in this chapter we would briefly introduce the background of theresearch, the purpose and the significance of the research, the structure of the thesis inthe following three sections.

1.1 Background of the Research
As the saying goes, “Science is the first productivity.” Science and Technologyplay a significant role in any country’s development. Since Reform and Open Policy,the contact of China with the outside world have become more and more frequently.China pays much attention to this field, and makes every effort to catch up with thedeveloping of the world’s advanced science and technology. As a result, the materialsof English for Science & Technology (EST) turn to be a strong pushing force forChina’s advancement in the field of science and technology. Consequently, ESTdiscourse gradually becomes a part and parcel of College English Teaching. It isknown to all that nominalization possesses the characteristics of objectivity, solemnand precise style. So it is regarded as one of the most obvious features in EST and it isoften employed in the EST discourse. Just for this reason, the study of the applicationof nominalization of EST discourse in College English Teaching begins to catchlinguists and scholars’ attention.

1.1研究背景
常言道,“科学是第一生产力”,“科技在任何国家的发展中扮演一个重要的角色。自改革开放以来,已成为中国与外部世界的接触越来越频繁。中国十分重视这一领域,并尽一切努力赶上世界上先进的科学和技术发展。因此,英语的材料科学与技术(EST)的打开中国在科学和技术领域的进步是一个强有力的推动力量。因此,EST话语逐渐成为大学英语教学的重要组成部分。这是众所周知的所有名词具有客观性的特点,庄重和严谨的作风。因此,它被视为在美国东部时间最明显的特征之一,它往往是受聘于美国东部时间话语。正是由于这个原因,名词EST话语在大学英语教学中的应用研究开始赶上语言学家和学者的关注。


1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
As the role of Science and Technology becomes more and more important, ESTbegins to get attention of linguists from different perspectives. It is widelyacknowledged that characterized by its high complexity and abstraction, EST is oftenconsidered to be an obstacle for students in the study of English. Becausenominalization has the function of increasing the lexical density of texts, thus makingthe texts be more objective and formal, it is widely applied in EST. From this point,we could say that it is significant to conduct a study on the phenomenon ofnominalization in EST discourse.
Since Jespersen paid his attention to the study of nominalizations, other majorschools of linguistic have begun to conduct a verity of studies on the phenomenon ofnominalization.
