I. Introduction
American slang was used to be regarded as a vulgar language, including jargon, technical terms, as well as argot and so on. All of them were used by the undereducated; however, nowadays American slang is used widely in films, literary works, newspapers and magazines, as well as in ads; and even in our daily life, a great number of the higher educated people chat together with a great deal of slang. What’s more, American slang, as a kind of spoken languages, some of them is turned into, or become written English. Generally speaking, American slang is used widely in all walks of life, and is becoming a trend to be accepted by an increasing number of people.
II. American slang is used widely in various fields and groups
A. In ads
With the rapid development of economy, daily life needs advertisements because the main function of advertising is to disseminate information and commodities, services, culture, employment, student enrolment and even marriage. However, in this exploding information society, how to attract other people’s eyesight is becoming a main point. In order to draw attention from the public, many managers rack their brains to find many ways to appeal their customers to buy their products. One of the ways is to exploit humorous words or ads to draw the public’s attention. Now, this paper will illustrate several funny ads, which use many slang words. Such as, Just do it. ( 只管去做 )is Nike’s ads words; The test is great.( 味道好极了) is appeared in Nescafe’s; Intelligence everywhere.( 智慧演绎,无处不在 ) is the ads words of Motorola’s cell phone; and Feel the new space( 感受新世界 ) is Samsung’s, etc.
B. In film products & TV shows
As we all known, film as an art not only reflects the realistic life, but also above it. A great number of American people are fond of it. Take Friends for example, it is very humorous and loved by many people, and there is no exception to the UK’s former Prime Minister Mrs. Thatcher, who is famous for her inflexible and conservative image. For instance after a brief introduction of Friends a familiar topic song will rise, like, “I’ll be there for you,” there includes several slang words in this song,“your job is a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s D. O. A.”(尤子晓 2007.No.28) What does D. O. A mean here? If one does not know slang, she/he never knows its real meaning.本

A is the acronym of Dead On Arrival, it is a medicine term, which means one died on the way to a hospital, but here, in this song which implies that one is crossed in love. And in this sitcom, which tells a lot of young men’s love affairs, thus in Friends which has a great deal of slang words as well as idioms about it. For example ,if one loves someone, saying,“ I like you” that is too direct, let alone to say “I am fond of you”,because American people often say,“I am attracted to you”or“I have a crush on you”; if they loved each other, they would say “to hit it off ” while “There is no chemistry between us ”means the chance to fall in love is slim, and so forth. Besides the Friends, there are many other films, like Ten Things I Hate about You, American Pie, and A Walk to Remember ….All of them have plenty slang in it. If we study some slang words and know them, to watch films is just a piece of cake, which could help us to know American’s background culture, and at the same time, our listening and speaking will be improved a lot.
