The study of African English and American movies
Chapter 1 General Introduction
1.1 The purpose of this study
Language is not only to be used as a tool for communication, but also for categorizing, degrading and oppressing of people. Most times language is routinely used to relegate certain ethnic minority groups as well. That is to say, language has close contact with human's life, and penetrates their culture and daily life.
At the end of the fourteenth century, there was no Standard English until Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales. That is to say, after that there is a single of the language, whose vocabulary and grammar were written gradually throughout the country. Chaucer wrote in the educated variety of the London area. The poet Langston Hughes wrote some poems in southern dialects. In Mark Twain's novels, characters speak dialects. York Corpus Christi Plays were written in the Northern dialect.
Then and now, the English language consists of all its varieties, which today include Standard English, Black English and many others. There are no better or worse ones among varieties. Standard English can fail to convey the speakers' meaning as well, if it is unfamiliar to the listener.
It is the truth that there is a loss of vocabulary and words of some dialects with time. However, Standard English can be heard in most places, such as films, radio and television. Students in most countries are quite often educated in school to learn Standard English, including its pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. On the contrary, other varieties such as Black English are comparatively less used in TV plays, films and radio, let alone at class. But in spite of the loss of words from the vocabulary of the varieties, there is still plenty of evidence of their own linguistic features.
Motion pictures, of which language is a kind of expression, belong to non-material culture. When Warner Entertainment Company introduced the movie "lights of New York" in 1928, sound movies became popular with people gradually. Since then, language becomes an important means of expression of movies. Meanwhile, movies to certain degree reflect and influent people's life through many aspects, including the plots, actors' raiment, lines, music and so on.
This thesis will introduce the concept of African American vernacular English, which provide a theoretical basis for the analysis of linguistic features of AAVE in the context of African American motion pictures. The author of this thesis wants to represent the relation between movies and language by using some examples, the impact of language to people's life, and describe the terrible influence of discrimination caused by language in people's life, also depict the national spirit of African Americans. Through the analysis of the linguistic features of AAVE, the author of this paper also wants to put a point that the analytic features of AAVE become more and more obvious.
The strengthening of analytic features means that the grammar turns out to be weaker, and semantics  turns  out to be much stronger.  This language phenomenon is in agreement with the developing tendency of all human languages.
