本研究具有一定的理论意义和方法论意义，并对这一结构的英语教学实践有一定的帮助。本文在肯定这一型式具有评价功能的基础上，通过数据支撑找出了出现在其中的典型形容词和典型动词，分析了这一型式及其变体式的评价指向。
Chapter 1 INRODUCTION
"To breathe is to judge" wrote John Dryden in the 1660s marking the distinctive nature of descriptive vis-a-vis legislative and theoretical criticism (Watson 1962). If we were to substitute breathing with language, Volosinov's (1973: 105) following pronouncement comes very close: No utterance can be put together without value judgment. Every utterance is above all an evaluative orientation. Therefore, each element in a living utterance not only has a meaning but also has a value [emphasis in original].
The evaluative orientation is inescapable because the words we speak are not our own; they are botTOwed from others and from elsewhere. As Bakhtin ([1935] 1981:293) puts it:
All words have the‘taste" of a profession, a genre, a tendency, a party, a particular work, a particular person, an age group, the day and hour. Each word tastes of the context and contexts in which it has lived its socially charged life.
From the perspective of evaluation, the researches are more generally believed that the pattern it+be+*+clause has the function of evaluation and Sinclair even regards it as a `diagnostic' for evaluation (Hunston and Sinclair: 2000). But there is few research of the descriptive analysis of evaluation from the viewpoint of subjective and objective orientation.
