Chapter One INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background and Significance of the Study
Since the emergence of the first computer ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integratorand Calculator) on Feb.14th, 1946 in the University of Pennsylvania, USA, computers havebeen widely applied in our daily life and academic research. Under such a background, new scientific disciplines as well as new branches of the already-existed ones have comeinto being, one of which is corpus linguistics. Over the years, corpus linguistics has beendeveloping at a rapid speed with three marvelous trends: (a) the establishment ofmulti-language corpus on a large scale; (b) research on the deep processing of corpus; (c)wide application of corpus in language-related areas (Thomas, 2001). The 20thcentury,especially the years after the Second World War, witnessed an unprecedented prosperity oftranslation activities in western countries, which was shown not only by the wide range oftranslation materials but also by the plentiful fruits yielded on a large scale (Tan Zai-xi,1991). More and more attention was paid to translation studies, bringing about new schoolsand opinions on translation theories. Quite a few translation theorists began to breakthrough the traditional research methodology. Instead of basing translation theories andskills on empiricist conclusion, they incorporated translation studies into a more extensivefield. As Baker (2009) noted in her book “Translation Studies”, “Translation Studies hasemerged as a thriving interdisciplinary and international area of scholarship.”Corpus-based translation studies applying modern computer technology provides one ofthe best examples. In 1985, Vanderauwera (1985) discussed the three translation universals, namely simplification, explicitation and generalization, by investigating a corporaconsisting of the English version of five Dutch novels. His research initiated corpus-basedstudies on translation universals. In 1993, English scholar Mona Baker publicized a papertitled “Corpus Linguistics and Translation Studies: Implications and Applications”,exploring the impact that the availability of corpora is likely to have on translation studiesas an empirical phenomenon, thus becoming the first to introduce the techniques andmethodology developed in the field of corpus linguistics into the discipline of translationstudies (Baker, 1993). She shows no doubt in predicting that “the availability of corporaand of corpus-driven methodology will soon provide valuable insights in the appliedbranch of translation studies, and that the impact of corpus-based research will be felt therelong before it begins to trickle into the theoretical and descriptive branches of thediscipline”. Tymoczko (1998) also expressed her approval of corpus translation studies, pointing out that corpus-based translation studies enable researchers to encode in compactand efficient forms as well as to access and interrogate vast quantities of data. Since then, corpus has been widely used in various fields of translation studies: translation universalsby Baker (1993) and Toury (2004); a translator’s style under the leadership of Mona Baker(2004) translation process by Shlesinger (1995) and Englund-Dimitrova (2005), andapplications of the research such as translators’ training, translation teaching and thedevelopment of related software programs by Zanettin (1998), Monzo (2003) and Pearson(2003).Undoubtedly, corpora have already shown their advantage本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
