1.1 Purpose and Significance of the Research研究的意义和目的

It aims to gain insights into the patterns, causesand developmental characteristics of redundancy errors in their writings with the hopethat the findings from this study can shed some light on English teaching.Shannon (1948) defines redundancy as extra information released purposely fromthe perspective of information theory. Linguists have proved that it is a commonphenomenon in language both in the language systems and people's dailycommunications through language, which is an intrinsic feature of human language.However，the former scholars focus on the function or the usage of redundancy incommunication or translation, whereas few have studied its defects. In CLEC,redundancy is treated as a kind of error. We can find a large amount of examples onredundancy. With the interference of language transfer, redundancy errors occur at eachlevel of language. They may be structural, semantic and pragmatic redundancy.Errors are unsuccessful bits of language (James 1998: 228). According to Dulay and Burt, thesignificance of the study on errors at least has two major senses: “ It provides data fromwhich inferences about the nature of the language learning process can be made; itindicates to teachers and curriculum developers which part of the target languagestudents have most difficulty in producing correctly and which error types detract mostfrom a learner's ability to communicate effectively" (1982: 98). Redundancy errors areobvious in the writings of English Foreign language learners, and most of them areviewed as Chinglish，which sometimes hinder successful communication.Therefore, we focus on the redundancy errors committed by Chinese EFL learnersin writing. On the one hand, a vigorous writing should be concise. As William Strunk.Jrand E.B.White said in their famous little book, “ Vigorous writing is concise. A sentenceshould contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for thesame reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine nounnecessary parts，，(1979: 23). And Joan Pinkham (1999) has pointed out that whethertranslating the Chinese articles into English, or Chinese writing in English, almost allChinese English learners will make redundancy errors. Compared with target language,nonnative-like phenomenon should arouse our attention. On the other hand, in virtue oferror analysis, we can find what kinds of redundancy errors are made by ChineseEnglish learners in their writings and get reminded of what should be paid moreattention to.
